Situated near the famous Wookey Hole, our farm can be found down a lane from the sister village of Wookey, 2 miles from the lovely historic city of Wells. The level 2.5 acre site is part of a small family-run goat farm, where children can pet the animals, and campers of all ages can learn about the day-to-day running of a dairy goat farm. We currently have a herd of 45 nannies and 2 billies. The goats start kidding in March and generally all have twins. On the Farm
Ian and Sarah both grew up on farms and are delighted to now be running their own dairy goat farm. Ian grew up, worked and was a partner on his family’s dairy farm in Wales. During those years he became interested in dairy goat farming and arranged to do some work experience with the goat milking herd at the National Institute for Research in Dairying, Shinfield, Reading. The seed was sown but it wasn’t until he met his lovely, like-minded wife that the dream became a reality!
Sarah grew up on her small family-run farm in the Brendon Hills in Somerset. The family farmed a beef suckler herd, grew crops and let grass and stables to local farmers. Her mother always kept goats and so she needed no convincing as to the merits of keeping them. What more could a wife ask for than 80 kids born every year!
We are gradually building up our goat numbers, aiming to get to 90 milking goats by 2015. Most of our goats are British Toggenbergs – a soft brown colour with white stripes on their faces and white ‘socks’. But we have a few mixed breeds too, including British Alpines and Saanens. A flock of Jacob an Suffolk sheep, our donkey named pickles and hens complete the farm with fresh eggs available. We also keep rare-breed pigs at certain times of the year.
We currently sell dairy produce from the goats and lamb, pork, goat meat and eggs. We sell our farm produce in our farm shop, at local markets, shows and local shops. Last year we made some Tandoori Masala goat sausages which went down well with locals and campers. We have just made another batch so if you would like to try we will have some in our shop.
