Question: Dogs - where do they sleep when you camp?

I have asked about kids and camping and now I am asking about dogs, because we will havew the double whammy!

We used to camp BC (before children - and dogs) and want to try it again. This time, with family additions, we anticipate it might be a bit different.

So to all of you seasoned dog owner-campers out there: where do the dogs sleep when you camp? pros and cons, please!

Well Bekah, Our lovely border collie Jessy sleeps on a dog cushion on the floor, though I'm sure she would much prefer our bed.

Your lucky...... we always find our dogs start off on the dog bed on the floor but continually try to climb onto beds throughout the night!!!! Posted by Julie Roberts on 13 Mar 2013
Yes this also happens with us.....they always try to sneak in bed!!! Often have to tell them to get back on their bed! Good luck Posted by Mary Jones on 19 Mar 2013

We have camping crates for our Border Collies. set up in the awning, they are quite happy, 3 to a crate and one in the van, and yes he is my special boy. Most places seem happy so long as they don't make any noise.

"Gromit"our Border collie always sleeps in the campervan. Fortunately he never tries to get in the bed. His favourite place is in the cab in the drivers footwell although he sometimes sleeps under the table (we have a separate permanent bed).

If travelling long distances We occasionally have the odd night in a lay bye or motorway services (average cost about £8-) and his sharp ears are a useful early warning system if anybody is about. (No point in having a dog and barking yourself).

I know a lot of people are anti lay bye camping but if lorry drivers and gypsies can do it then so can tax payers. In any event we are very responsible, never camp where signs forbid it, and choose our locations carefully so please don't reply with lots of comments that we are being irresponsible. As a matter of interest there are normally a few other camper vans or motor homes around us when we wake up in the morning, but so far no caravans.

We have 2 dogs, and a Hymer Motorhome with a drop down bed. They both sleep under the bed in the front cab area and love it, we have had no problems at all so far! Hope this helps? Posted by Caz Holland on 29 May 2013
Hello Caz Yes they like it in the cab. I think one of the reasons Gromit likes it there is because we don't have curtains over the cab windows ( we don't use the cab as part of the accommodation area) so therefore he can always see out. Posted by alan Myland on 30 May 2013
I'm going to be trying the 'cab' option this weekend. our first night with two dogs in our 'new' (well, preloved but new to us!) motorhome...ear plugs will definitely be required... Posted by Bekah Mardall on 31 Oct 2014

Does anyone put their dog in their car overnight when camping? Just wondering about the barking!
Comment
Hi, we have a border collie and she sleeps in her dog crate overnight in the back of our pick-up, we do have a truckman (i.e. roof over back of pick-up). Fortunately, she is quite a good dog, regarding barking, although now and again, she has a little 'woof up' at what I don't know, but hey she is a dog. The crate has a proper crate bed in it and we cover it with a blanket, just to keep the chill out when temperatures drop. She appears to be happy enough! Posted by Ray Clements on 13 Mar 2013
I think we may do the same as Ray Clements and use the dog cage in the back of the car.....won't have to wake up to unwanted licks in the night!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Posted by Mary Jones on 19 Mar 2013
Thanks - dog crate really useful idea. Will root it out from wherever it went after their puppyhood!
