Dog friendly beaches on the Lizard Peninsula

This beautiful region of the UK is an ideal location for great UK camping holidays with dogs. The Lizard Peninsula, connected to the rest of Cornwall by only a thin bridge of land, provides food for the eye, the mind and the soul. Explore, discover and revel in the beauty of this extraordinary place, with your dog by your side, because not only is this one of the most magically beautiful and unusual landscapes of our great Isle, many of the varied and natural beaches are also all year round dog friendly beaches making the Lizard an ideal venue for a full family camping holiday.

Lizard Camping

Here you will find campsites on the Lizard with easy access to these many beaches - you could visit one beach a day and still have some left over at the end of the week - spoilt for choice!

Bessy’s Cove: A small, south facing cove where Mounts Bay meets the Lizard Peninsula, is great to explore particularly at low tide when some patches of sand are revealed. Some parking is available a short walk from the beach. Access to the beach is via steps and a steep path off the South West Coast Path which provides access to nearby beaches such as Stackhouse Cove,Piskies Cove and Kenneggy Sands.

Cadgwith Beach (North): Cadgwith village, a working fishing village set in a beautiful cove, has two south-east-facing, shingle beaches; the Northern beach, home to the village' small fishing fleet, is dog friendly all year round. A car park is situated in the main village where you will find a shop, café, pub and toilets. Facilities include a shop, a pub and toilets.

Coverack Beach: This wild beach is good for a family day out, with great rocks to explore. It is a popular fishing location. There is easy access to the beach via steps from the car park and you will also find cafés and toilets in the village.

Gillian Harbour: Gillan Harbour, situated in the mouth of a small creek off the great Helford river is a great spot to visit. The beach is small and shingle and often very quiet, as this area is little known to families. The celebrated South West Coast Path passes through Gillan, which provides excellent walking opportunities to Nare Point and beyond. It's pretty wild here: no parking or facilities - but some of us like it like that!

Gunwalloe Fishing Cove Beach: This sand and pebble west-facing beach is sheltered in a small cove about 5 miles from Helston. You will have to park at Church Cove and walk along the South west Coastal path to reach it around Pedngwinian headland, and you'll find it quiet when you get there as the water conditions aren't conducive to water sports.

Kennack Sands: A south east-facing beach with wide expanses of sand, great rock pools to explore and lovely grassy banks ideal for snoozing! This is a great spot for the family day out. Set in a nature reserve in an area of Outstanding Natural Beuaty, this beach is picture perfect. If you fancy a walk, the South West Coast Path heads east to Coverack and South to Lizard Point via Cadgwith. The beach-side carpark is convenient and there are toilets a cafe and beach shop. Dogs are not permitted on the west of the beach from Easter to October, but are permitted on the east of the beach all year round. You might want to kow that lifeguards patrol the beach during the summer, should any members of your family want to get wet!

Kenneggy Sands: This is one for the more intrepid beach lover: a crescent-shaped, south-facing beach between Penzance and Helston, which needs to be visited at low tide, when a sandy beach is revealed. At high tide the beach (and the access!) is almost entirely covered and there are no facilities and limited parking. However it is still worth a visit and can be accessed via the South West Coastal path, should you want to tie it in with a walk. Access to the beach is via rocks and ladders (sounds like fun!)

Loe Bar Beach: A small area of south-west-facing beach in the middle of Porthleven Sands on the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall, which forms a natural barrier to Cornwall's largest freshwater lake: the Loe. The walking in this area is amazing - both coastal and woodland, if you want a change of scene! Wildlife is abundant, particularly bird life, so bring your binoculars! park your car at porthleven and walk the mile or so the Loe Bar bech.

Mullion Cove Beach: This small, west-facing beach in Mullion harbour is accessible only at low tide. Mullion harbour is quintessentially Cornish and a great place for holiday snaps, as well as walks along cliff tops along the scenic South West Coast Path to Kynance Cove to the south and Gunwalloe to the north. Visit this spot for fine sea views, and a diverse range of plant life and wildlife. A small car park is situated around a quarter of a mile from the beach where you will find toilets and a café. Mullion, a thriving Lizard village, is only 1.5 miles away with art galleries, cafés and restaurants.

Porthallow Beach A small, pebbly beach in the unspoilt village of picturesque Porthallow with excellent views over the Fal estuary. Great for rock pools at low tide and great walks in the area make it a great venue for all the family.
