Dog Friendly Beaches, Somerset

The Somerset coast is long fabled as a great UK camping and caravanning location with its offer of seaside fun, picture perfect scenery, historic fishing harbours and boating marinas. Think donkey rides, ice-cream, rockpooling and fish and chips and treat yourself to a bygone holiday with the comforts and facitlies of modern life. And there's no reason why a beach holiday in Somerset should exclude the family dog as there are many great family friendly beaches where dogs are welcome all year round - the Somerset coast makes for great holidays with dogs, even in high season when other regions restrict dog access.

Berrow: This six mile length of beach with sand dunes and firm sand, is the second longest stretch of sand in Europe - perfect for exhausting your dog! With secluded sandy dunes, a famous Ship Wreck, and marshland that attracts various seabirds, there's plenty to do. Horse-riding and swimming are popular on this beach but please note that it is dangerous to approach the water's edge at low tide as the beach is so flat and the water advances very quickly. For longer stay parking, leave your car in Brean.

Doniford Beach: A part-sandy beach with rock pools revealed as the tide drops; this beach is popular with fossil hunters. Nearby facilities include shops, pub, a campsite, slipway of boat launches and toilets. You can walk from here to Watchet and explore the town. Parking is available.

Porlock Weir - Otherwise known as Porlock Bay Beach, this huge pebbly cove, set beneath impressively high cliffs and hills, is well worth a visit. Popular for fishing, swimming, surfing and sailing, the water quality is excellent. Set in the Exmoor National Park Facilities include toilets with disabled facilities, and a nearby pub, resturant and shops. The South West coastal path passes through Porlock Weir, with many footpath walks leading over Exmoor. Parking is rarely a problem.

Watchet Beach: This pebbly cove by Watchet Town harbour accepts dogs all year round and is closeby all of the facilities and attractions that this bustling, traditional seaside town has to offer: shops, pubs and a museum among others. Boat trips can be taken from Watchet to explore the local coastline.
