Have we found the Best Campsite in Wales?

Claiming that you've found the 'best campsite in Wales' might seem a bit forward, a tad confident, a tall claim indeed, especially as the choice of camping in Wales is a fabulously varied affair. And, we hear you cry, how on earth have you narrowed down the criteria upon which to base your decision? It's true indeed that 'perfect camping experiences' are likely to be as varied as campers themselves...However, Tyn Yr Onnen, in Gwynedd North Wales ticks so many boxes for that special camping experience that we are feeling rather smugly confident about our recommendation!

Ok, so here's the disclaimer...if you're looking for an indoor or outdoor heated swimming pool on your campsite, or for a club-house, mini-supermarket or laid-on evening entertainment, the chances are that a stay at Tyn Yr Onnen mightn't be quite the right sort of camping break for you. If, however, it's space, fresh-air, dark skies, fabulous mountain views and access to all of North Wales' most vital statistics you're after however, Tyn Yr Onnen will be just perfect.

Camping on the Wilder Side

Those of you who already know and love the rugged beauty and gorgeous wilderness of North Wales won't be disappointed by Tyn Yr Onnen.

Tyn Yr Onnen is a working hill farm, established over many generations; the rhythms of the farm underpin the campsite's very nature and this is one of the special attractions of staying on the site. Contact with the farm's many animals, including the joyful arrival of the first spring lambs, provides plenty of gentle interest on-site (there really is no need for any artificial entertainment!) and open access to the moorland areas of the farm offer the epitome of peace and tranquility for those longing to unwind.

Camping visitors are welcomed into the swing of farm life on Tyn Yr Onnen.

Site Owner, Len explains, "The farm has been in the family for more than 300 years. In the late 1960’s it diversified in a very small way into camping and we have been doing it ever since."

"We are first and foremost a farm, so our camp site is really focused on country pursuits, from walking up Snowdon, helping feed lambs in spring, feeding chickens, turkeys, ducks, trying to find our Llamas on the moorland part of the farm, patting the donkeys, sitting round camp fires or simply just soaking up the wonderful scenery."

Camping in Gwynedd

Camping at Tyn Yr Onnen is an ideal location for experiencing the adventures of both Gwynedd's coast and mountain.

Although the site itself is steeped in tranquility and beauty, you will find yourself only a stone's throw from many of the region's most attractive features. Set off from your site and just 8 minutes drive away you'll find the impressive medieval fortress of Caernarfon Castle; you'll be only 20 minutes drive from the Menai Bridge crossing to the delights of the Isle of Anglesey; take the short 20 minute drive to Llanberis at the foot of Snowdon where you can take a train journey along the heritage line to the the mountain's Summit; you'll find yourself less than an hour's drive from the vast stretches of sandy coastline along the Llyn Peninsular.

At Tyn Yr Onnen, you will quite literally have the best of North Wales on your tent-step. And the cherry on the cake? At the end of a hard day's enjoyment, you can return to the sublime tranquility of the hills surrounding this special campsite.

Summit Snowdon from Tyn Yr Onnen

There can't be many campsites in the UK so close to great fell walking as Tyn Yr Onnen. This North Wales campsite is loved not only by families looking for a true, back-to-nature bonding experience...

Cyclists and walkers come to take advantage of the challenge provided by the hills and mountains watching over the pitched tents and un-hitched 'vans.

Walk from your pitch at dawn and explore the foothills surrounding the farm. Site owner, Helen, explains, "Early morning and evenings are some of my favourite times when the sun is casting so many different shadows across the farm and campsite. The air always seems so pure at these times, and there is a real clarity to the colours of the mountains."

From the farm there are 100’s of acres of heath land to explore, with many walks for beginners as well as treks for the more seasoned rambler.

The most adventurous can walk to the summit of Snowdon from the Farm enjoying fabulous peace and some of the most beautiful views across the North Wales terrain along the way.

Those who prefer to lay their heads and their aching legs in something a little more luxurious than a tent, might like to consider a stay in Tyn Yr Onnen's first high-spec camping pod, with unbroken views of the countryside beyond.

Why else do we think that Tyn Yr Onnen is the best Campsite in Wales?

Well, campers love the warm welcome from Helen and Len, the campsite's owners, the clean, well stocked shower rooms with abundant hot water (essential after all that outdoor adventure!) They love the on-site games room with pool table and table tennis for a spot of evening competition. They love the opportunity to have a real, open campfire with wood provided by the site at a reasonable price. They love the short walk into the village of Waunfawr where the Snowdonia Inn serves beer from its microbrewery and good, home-cooked meals. So, we really are feeling confident in our recommendation!
