Events in Essex

Visiting Essex? With over 350 miles of coastline, a treasury of pre-historic monuments, a cluster of creeks and marshlands, and networks of thatched houses in charming pastels, it's no wonder you're raring to go. Defiantly rural and picturesque, and worlds apart from neighbouring London, Essex is a surprisingly happening place. So much so, in fact, that we've put together a list of seven events in Essex bound to pique your curiosity. So, if you thought spending some quality time orienteering or geo-cashing in the great outdoors is all the fun you'd have this year, then keep your eyes peeled for these upcoming must-try activities and events in Essex.

European Woodworking Show 2017, Sept. 16-17

From marionette makers to toolmakers, some of the finest woodworkers in the world convene at Cressing Temple Barns in Suffolk mid-September for the European Woodworking Show, one of the lesser-known Essex festivals. Spoon carving, axe-making, knife sharpening, steam bending, and many other demonstrations are on the agenda, so prepare to be thoroughly amazed at the versatility of English hardwoods.

AJ Fairs Antiques & Collectors Fair, Sept. 17

'The Fair Fairs', as they're called, are simply unmissable. Seasoned sellers display their valuables alongside first-timers clearing out their attics, so if you've got a treasure trove of your own, or are looking to make one, these monthly events in Essex will be your go-to place. Antiques, collectables, vintage and retro trinkets will be strewn across the tables for your viewing pleasure, so clear the agenda and grab yourself a bargain at the AJFairs.

Apple Festival, Sept. 23-24

There's something for everyone at festivals in Essex. The Apple Festival at the Audley End House and Gardens in Saffron Walden is one such event, and it takes place a week after the Apple Day at the Forgotten Gardens of Easton lodge. Along with a plethora of other apple harvest celebrations taking place across Essex in October, the festival is a great time to get crafty. Expect gardening demos, bobbing competitions, folk music in the background and over 150 mouth-watering apple varieties to taste and wonder at in the organic kitchen garden.

Model Exhibition & Steam Day, Oct. 8

It's not every day that you hail a ride on a miniature steam engine, so if you feel like taking a step back in time and seeing the world through a giant's eyes, then head over to Langford for a day of steaming good fun. The Model Exhibition & Steam Day at the Museum of Power near Maldon will showcase Marshall, the giant steam engine, along with a range of diesel engines, a workshop and the Astaria model village.

Harwich International Sea Shanty Festival, Oct. 13-15

Festivals in Essex may come and go, but shanties stay with you. The 12th edition of the Harwich Shanty Festival brings concerts, street theatre, Shanty Train rides, barge trips, and sea-themed crafts at the Redoubt Fort, workshops, guided walks, and Sea singarounds and gigs throughout the weekend. French, Dutch Spanish and Italian shanty singers have signed up to celebrate alongside seafaring Britain, so come say Ahoy There and bring your poetry and stories with you, if you fancy.

Wild Bird ID, Dec. 14

When you've had enough of those Essex festivals, take a minute to count the geese. The Wildlife Trust is putting together a course on identifying the lovely birds that grace the shores of Essex. Geese, mallards, oyster catchers, gulls, and other waders and waterfowl will be the stars of the show, and you're invited to join and donate to the cause. Aptly named Wild Bird Identification, the show starts at the Abbotts Hall Farm, and ends at the Abberton Reservoir Visitor Centre on the Blackwater Estuary.
