Events in Yorkshire

When scouting for heavenly places to visit and unwind over the next few months, look no further than God's Own Country. Well, that may be a bit further than you'd expect, but the Yorkshire pudd, pikelets, relish, cheese and other 'scran' will make it worth your while. As will an array of exciting events in Yorkshire due to take place later this year. So, if you'd like to visit this land of Dales and Moors favoured by the gods and blessed with such rich heritage that it reinvented the teacake -ee by gum! -, then here's a list of events in Yorkshire you simply shouldn't miss.

William Hill St Leger Yorkshire Festival, Sept. 13-16

The oldest classic in the world, the St Leger Stakes is the Triple Crown's final leg, now at its 241st running. Whether it's the straight-mile veteran charity race, the Best Dressed Lady competition, the Doncaster Cup or the excitement of cheering your favourite colt or filly on, you'd better get on your horse if you don't want to miss this year's racing extravaganza at the William Hill St Leger Festival.

Yarndale, Sept. 23-24

Knitting, spinning, crocheting, dyeing, and felting may not strike you as life-changing hobbies, but all that could change with a visit to the Yarndale festival of creativity at the Skipton Auction Mart. Put your knowledge of 'all things woolly' to the test as you soak up a lifetime's worth of creative vibes at this most light-hearted of Yorkshire events. If you haven't entered your 12-inch square into the Knit-Inn to Win! competition, don't worry: the exhibitions, demos and workshops will more than make up for it.

Festival of Thrift, Sept. 23-24

This year's Festival of Thrift, one of the lesser-known events in Yorkshire, takes frugality to a whole new level. To take part in an array of free activities for the entire family, centred on eco-friendliness, self-sufficiency and creativity, all you need to do is head over to Redcar. On-site jam making with your own vegetables and fruit, den building, and spoon carving are some of the activities you can take on. Alternatively, you could try mending your devices at the Fix-It café, programming a recycled robot at the Crumble workshop, or taking some fashion tips from the Oxglam show.

Yorkshire Dales Cheese Festival, Sept. 23-30

While you're in the area, come sample the local delicacies at the Yorkshire Dales Cheese Festival on September 23, when the Cheese Experience weekend kicks off in Hawes with mouth-watering morsels at the Wensleydale Creamery. Sample the savoury treats on display at this Yorkshire festival, made using the age-old recipes of Normandy's Cistercian monks. Then enjoy the rest of the festival with happenings across the area and produce from Yorkshire Dales NP and the Nidderdale AONB, including delicious Coverdale, Ribblesdale, and Swaledale cheeses.

999 Emergency Day, Sept. 24

Not far from York is the Yorkshire Air Museum in Elvington, where fire and rescue teams from across the region will convene on September 24 for demonstrations and celebrations. It's not so much a crash course into crash rescue, as it is a change to show your appreciation for the phenomenal work of the emergency services.

Colourful Winter Gardening, Oct. 17

Enhance your skillset and the look of your garden in one fell swoop as you attend the Colourful Winter Gardening workshop at Wynyard Hall, in Tees Valley. It doesn't matter much if you've got green fingers, because you'll have on-site horticultural experts on hand from 10 am, with all the advice you need to give your evergreens some TLC. Two hours later, you'll emerge a new person, rewarded with a winter planter as keepsake from your Yorkshire events, compliments of Wynyard Hall's gardeners.

Countryside Live, Oct. 21-22

Having partnered with Channel 5's The Yorkshire VET, this harvest-themed event held at the Great Yorkshire Show showground in Harrogate will henceforth be known as the Yorkshire VET Countryside Live. Aside from the livestock auctions, the show jumping, the tasting hub and the children's area, this year's event will also feature Julian Norton and Peter Wright broadcasting live from the Main Ring.

Boxing Day Dip, Dec. 26

Raising funds for local causes, there's more to the Boxing Day Dip than meets the eye. Persevering for nearly half a century, these longest-running dipping events in Yorkshire bring together dippers from far and wide to the coastal town of Whitby, so that they may don their fancy dress and soak it in the ice-cold waters of the North Sea.
