Things to do in Anglesey

If ever there's a time and place to reconnect with nature, surely, it's the Isle of Anglesey in summer. Whether your motorhome carries you along the spectacular coastline speckled with beaches and quaint harbours with old-world charm, or toward inland areas punctuated by impressive castles, mighty fortresses, and ancient mounds, you're simply never short of things to do in Anglesey.

Roughly 95% of the coast is part of an AONB designated area, which attracts millions of visitors every year. It's not hard to see why: the stunning Isle of Anglesey Coastal Path comes with heath, dunes, marshes, cliffs, woodland, and even a special badge and a certificate of recognition if you've got what it takes to walk the full 125 miles. But it you're looking for exciting things to do in Anglesey in the warmer season, and you'd also like to go off the beaten track, then here are four of our suggestions for 2018:

Anglesey County Show in Gwalchmai

Carrying on a centuries-old tradition, the Anglesey County Show will be held in Anglesey on August 14 and 15. The site hosts caravan rallies, vintage car exhibitions, and trade shows throughout the year, so it's endowed with all the facilities and equipment you could need for a brief mid-week stay. The county show draws visitors in their tens of thousands and trade stands in their hundreds. If you can tear yourself away from the stands brimming with home grown treats, you'll watch shearing competitions, sheep dog trials, hair-dressing exhibitions, and show jumping competitions.

Tour de Môn

If you have a few hours and upwards of £30 to spare on August 19, 2018, then why not saddle up and head over to Newry Beach in Holyhead for the cycling sportive of the year, Tour De Môn. There are three paid tours to choose from, topped by the 106-mile island circuit, as well as a free 6-mile family ride, designed to challenge cyclists of all ages and abilities. Mind you, you need to pre-register to take part, but an event village will most likely be set up the weekend before the event with trade stalls and stunt shows. On the day of the tour, you'll have several feedstops en route, but don't let them distract you from the amazing views.

Ring o'Fire in Breakwater Country Park

Ring o'Fire is as tough as ultra-coastal marathons come. If you'd like to race some 135 miles alongside 149 people for three days on foot, then sign up quickly, because August 31 is just around the corner. There's also an ultramarathon-light, the 35.7-mile Firelighter journey – in effect Day 1 of the Ring o-Fire marathon. Better yet, set up camp en route and cheer the runners on as they pass, taking in all the beauty of the Anglesey coastline.

Beaumaris Food Festival in Beaumaris

An event set up for the benefit of the local leisure centre and run mainly by volunteers, Beaumaris Food Festival is held every year right on the town green, with the beach on one side and Beaumaris Castle on the other. Attend on the first two days in September, and enjoy live music, Top Chef demonstrations, chilli eating competitions, Puffin trails, and loads of food sampling with the Menai Strait and Snowdonia's outline in the background.
