What was great?
I've been to Beeches farm a couple of times, which probably says enough about it in itself! This bank holiday weekend we wanted somewhere close to home, but miles from anywhere, and Beeches farm provides this perfectly. At the end of a mile long entry lane, other than the farm buildings, there is almost nothing to remind you of city life. The toilet/shower blocks (20p for a 3 minute shower) are absolutely fantastic, solid brick built units with hot water, loo rolls, electric lights, the works! There are plenty of foot paths leading out in all directions for hill walking, forest paths, or back down the B roads. There are a number of stand pipes, and they even throw a few portaloos out into the fields on busy weekends, if you are pitched too far from the centre. They allow ground fires, but try to encourage the use of truck-wheel based raised braisers. We used a stone circle ourselves. They do laps of the site every evening selling extra wood from a golf buggy before reception closes, and the reception itself has an OS map on the wall and a leaflet stand for local attractions. I highly recommend a walk to Tintern through the forest, about 2km each way including some lovely views and a footbridge.

Even better if....
This year when we went, they were - in my opinion - seriously over booked. It says 20 pitches on here, which sounds about right, but there were well over 60 families crammed in this weekend. We were set up in lines, side by side, well less than the 6m separation suggestion.. barely room to park cars between us. This was the biggest downer on the weekend, especially as tennis balls and footballs pinged off our tent and windbreaks all through the day. The only other tricky point is the access road, it doesn't bother us, as we know where we're going, and in a Land Rover, but it is a long track that just slowly gets worse and worse, until you are basically driving on two delicately raised strips of concrete! A lot of people (and indeed myself the first time I visited) WILL stop after about 1km and question whether this is still the right road!
