A Certificated Location (CL) for current members of the Caravan Club only.
Pitch your Caravan and visit the Northern Lake District and The Solway Coast

The Location

Crofton Hall Caravan Park is a Caravan Club Certified Location (CL) site located within the two-acre Victorian walled garden of the Crofton Hall Estate, a picturesque, sheltered and quiet location around eight miles South-West of the City of Carlisle. Whilst Crofton Hall itself no longer stands, the rest of the estate bears testimony to the history that unfolded here.
The site itself has been developed with a view to preserving the history of the area, which can be traced back to the twelfth century, eventually becoming the seat of the Brisco family, until the 1930’s.

The CL Site
The site features five spacious pitches, each screened from the next by fencing and hedges. The site is surrounded on North, East and West sides by the original garden walls and on the south side by a screen of mixed pine trees.
Each pitch has its own drinking water supply and power hook-up and on the North edge of the site is a south-facing, semi-enclosed recreation area for picnics and barbecues, that may be enjoyed whatever the weather! Two of the pitches have partial hard-standing - ideal for motorhomes. A noticeboard in this area shows some local information and menus.

Facilities

Adjacent to the CL site to the North is the former Stable Block, which dates back to the 1850’ and features a beautiful grade II listed Georgian facade, within which, there is a family bathroom, which provides two toilet cubicles, two sinks with electric razor points and a shower room with four shower cubicles, each with an electric shower.
(Note for disabled customers: The shortest route to the bathroom requires the use of steps (as shown in the right-hand picture above). For those who use a mobility scooter, access is possible via the main site entrance, although it is further).

The bathroom is around 250ft (75m) from the site itself, via the steps in the building .

Our Neighbours!

Since the estate left the ownership of the Brisco family, the buildings have had to find new owners and new uses. They are now used for all kinds of different purposes, although some, like the former dairy, haven't changed all that much. We're very pleased to say that the buildings around Crofton Hall have generally been used for sympathetic purposes, which are very much in keeping with the spirit of the estate.
Here are just a few of our neighbours; we hope that it will show you what is on offer immediately surrounding the CL site.

The Crofton Lake

Near the site is a large coarse-fishing lake, which was originally the water feature for the Crofton Hall. It is now owned and managed by the Carlisle and District Angling Club.

The Cheese Farm

In the former dairy buildings, the Thornby Moor Dairy is housed, started in 1979 by Carolyn Fairbairn. Local shorthorn cows provide milk for unpasteurized cheese. Goats' cheese is another of their products, which visitors can purchase in the shop after viewing the cheese being made.

Overwater Boats

In the first floor of the Stable Block of Crofton Hall, Mark Aplin runs the excellent "Overwater Boats", which specialises in secure boat storage, bespoke boat building, refurbishment and repair and boat building courses.

Local Essentials

Shopping

The nearest shopping centre is the Cumbrian market town of Wigton located around three miles away from the site. Here there are several filling stations, Co-op (directions) and Lidl supermarkets and a variety of interesting locally-owned shops, including excellent butchers and greengrocers.

Each Friday a local market is held in the town, in fact in 2012, Celebrations were held in Wigton as it enjoyed the 750th anniversary of its Market Charter!

If you require a larger selection of shops, the Border City of Carlisle is just eight miles away. There is an excellent range of shops in the city centre as well as out of town supermarkets including Tesco, Co-op, ASDA and Morrisons.

There are plenty of other small markets towns that are well worth exploring, all with easy driving distance. We would recommend exploring Cockermouth and Keswick for shopping too.

Public Houses

We can heartily recommend the excellent Royal Oak at Curthwaite, less than two miles from the site, where excellent food and a fine range of wine and beer is available (01228 710219).

The Oddfellows Arms at Caldbeck (http://www.oddfellows-caldbeck.co.uk/) is also a favourite. This is a Jennings house (beer brewed at the Jennings Brewery just a few miles down the road) and benefits from beautiful surroundings. We would recommend setting off a little early and walking around the village, by the river, through the churchyard or even feeding the ducks at the duck pond!

If you prefer your beer even more locally brewed, the Old Crown at Hesket Newmarket (http://www.theoldcrownpub.co.uk/) is a tiny pub and micro-brewery on the edge of the Lake District, in a picturesque village. Ask the bar staff for a brewery tour whiclst you're there. The beer is award winning and the visit always an experience!

What to See

This whole area of the country is packed with fascinating things to see:

Carlisle — The Border City

Dominating the heart of the city is Carlisle Castle, the central keep of which began to be constructed by Henry I in the 12th century. The keep houses displays about the castle’s history, from medieval assaults via the exploits of Elizabethan Border Reivers to the Civil War siege and Bonnie Prince Charlie’s Jacobite Rising of 1745-6, not to mention Mary Queen of Scots, who was imprisoned here in 1567-8.

The Tullie House Museum, opposite the castle boasts a Silver award in the National Enjoy England Awards for Excellence 2008. Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery is an excellent choice for a great day out for all of the family.

Set in beautiful its Roman and Jacobean gardens, Old Tullie House is home to a nationally important collection of Pre-Raphaelite art, and has many classical Jacobean features kept in pristine condition, such as the impressive Jacobean staircase.

The Lake District

Around 30 minutes’ drive is the popular and picturesque town of Keswick, in the heart of the Northern Lake District. From here it is just a short drive to Windermere, Grasmere and Bowness with everything from world-class walking and climbing, to national trust properties, water sports, excellent shopping and fine dining.

The Solway Coast

Around 20 minutes’ drive is the popular seaside resort of Silloth on Solway. This beautiful coast is very popular with walkers and holidaymakers alike. Travelling South down the coast from Silloth, you will follow the road past mile after mile of unspoilt sandy beaches, eventually arriving at Allonby, with its locally renowned ice-cream parlour, and then onto Maryport – a once prominent national port, now re-developed with a beautiful marina and fascinating sea-life centre.

CL Site Tariff

We feel that the charging policy should be as transparent as possible, so our charge for a car and caravan (or motor-home) and awning is as follows:

Price per night: £15.00
Price per week: £95.00
If you wish to stop for more than a week, the first seven nights will charged at £95.00, with a charge of £15.00 per additional night, e.g. 10 nights = £140.00

When pre-booked, one night’s payment of £15.00 will be taken for each seven nights of the of the booking. This will secure the booking, as a non-refundable deposit, payable by cheque (please note that this cheque must be made payable to “Crofton Caravan and Leisure Storage Ltd”)

CL Site Conditions

In order to make your stay as pleasant as possible, there are just a few conditions for those using the site:

ARRIVAL/DEPARTURE

You may arrive any time after 1:00 pm on the day of arrival.
You must depart the site prior to 12:00 on the day of departure.

BOOKINGS

All stays must be pre-booked.
Only current Caravan Club members may use the site.
Anyone arriving without a booking must contact the site proprietors, Phil and Claire Hindmoor, on 016973 43615, before entering the site.
Anyone not having a booking may be asked to leave.

PAYMENT

All stays must be paid for by cash or cheque on the first night of the stay.
If you will not be available on the first night of your stay, please contact us to make other arrangements.

QUIET SITE

Out of respect for your fellow caravanners and those who live nearby, we ask that the site be quiet between the hours of 10:00pm and 08:00am

DOGS

It is fine to bring well behaved dogs with you to the site.
Dogs must be kept under control and must not be allowed to disturb others on the site, either by noise, by entering other pitches, or being allowed to roam free.
Please ensure that you always clean up after your dog.
Please keep your dog on lead when outside the park, as the park is surrounded by farmland.

REFUSE

Please be sure to keep the park tidy.
Refuse bins have been provided in the service area.
Please compact your refuse as much as possible, crushing cans and bottles to save space in the bins.
Please use the recycling facilities to minimise non-recycled waste on the site.
Please wash and dry any plastics, tins or glass that are dirty or have food residue on them, before recycling. We sort the recycling by hand...

MEMBERSHIP

The site is provided for Caravan Club members only.
All who use the site must be careful to follow the caravan club’s policies on use of CL sites.

We are located West of Carlisle, near to the A596 between Carlisle and Wigton, just West of the village of Thursby.
The site provides an excellent base for touring some areas of outstanding beauty:

The Northern Lake District.
South West Scotland.
The Solway Coast.
Carlisle - The Border City.

If you wish to use a SatNav system, please ensure that your use the postcode shown here: CA5 6QD, but please do not attempt to access Crofton via the A595 through the estate arch; please be sure to enter via the A596.

We have also had a number of customers turning right from the Crofton road too early, down the driveway of Crofton Hall Farm. This is a concreted farm lane, between sandstone gateposts, with a farmhouse at the end - not West Park, mentioned below. Please continue on down the hill, and turn into the West Park road.

I'm travelling from Carlisle or Cockermouth on the A595

NOTE: As of March 2012, the Carlisle Western Bypass is in operation, between Junction 44 of the M6/A74M, and the A595 Peter Lane/Orton Road Junction. Up to press, it is not shown on many maps as yet, but it is open and allows for excellent access to us from the North. The journey time from Junction 44 to Crofton has been reduced to around 20 minutes!

If you approach us from Carlisle on the A595 (from the North-West), you need to head for the roundabout that joins the A595 and A596 at Thursby. If you approach us from Cockermouth on the A595 (from the South-East), we would still advise that you continue to the roundabout at Thursby, as access from the A595 through the Crofton Estate Arch is very via a very narrow, one-way junction that we do not advise using, and which is subject to restrictions for larger vehicles.

From the Thursby roundabout, follow the directions below:

From the Thursby roundabout on the A595, take the junction onto the A596, signposted for "Wigton, Aspatria, Workington and Silloth".
Follow the A596 for around 1.6 miles.
Take the left hand turn signposted "Crofton" and "Cheese Farm".
Follow this road into Crofton for around 3/4 mile in total.
First, you will pass a white community centre on a left-hand junction on top of the hill - keep going.
From here, you will drop down a hill, and pass the entrance to a farm on your right - keep going.
You will drop down a second smaller hill, with a wooded section behind an old stone wall on your right.
At the bottom of this small hill, you can turn right at the end of the wooded section, into "West Park".
Follow this lane until it reaches a 90° right-hand bend; before rounding this bend, turn left into the site.
You've arrived!

I'm travelling from the West Coast (Wigton, Workington, Maryport or Silloth) on the A596

If you approach us from the West Coast on the A596 (from the South-West) you need to follow the directions below:

You are on the A596, heading between Wigton and Carlisle.
Around 1.6 miles before the Thursby roundabout, take the right-hand turn signposted "Crofton" and "Cheese Farm".
Follow this road into Crofton for around 3/4 mile in total.
First, you will pass a white community centre on a left-hand junction on top of the hill - keep going.
From here, you will drop down a hill, and pass the entrance to a farm on your right - keep going.
You will drop down a second smaller hill, with a wooded section behind an old stone wall on your right.
At the bottom of this small hill, you can turn right at the end of the wooded section, into "West Park".
Follow this lane until it reaches a 90° right-hand bend; before rounding this bend, turn left into the site.
