Dark Skies:
The skies here are special. The British Astronomical Association's Campaign for Dark Skies, names Mid Wales as one of the few remaining destinations in the UK where star gazing is still possible. To the majority of the people, there is light for 24 hours a day and true darkness is a thing of the past. Urban sky glow pollutes nearly all of the UK's night skies. Most people have always lived with light pollution so you may not know what you are missing. At Doldowlod, the absence of light pollution and the spectacular dark skies are breathtaking. On a dark, clear night you can see over a 1,000 stars stretching across the sky.

Just 0.5 miles away from Oak Grove Retreats lies the pretty village of Llanwrthwl. In the churchyard next to the parish church of St Gwrthwl is a huge standing stone. Gafallt was King Arthur’s dog, and legend says that he left his paw print in a stone somewhere on Carngafallt. It was also here that a hoard of gold jewellery was found – a set of bronze age torques, now in the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff.
Half a mile south of Doldowlod Old Station site is the impressive Doldowlod House. This fine house and its estate were purchased by the inventor James Watt - 1736 to 1819, perhaps best known for the unit of power measure named after him - late in his life, and while it was in his ownership he made many improvements to it. Doldowlod House is still owned by his descendants, the Gibson-Watt family.
