What was great?
Doone Valley Holidays is now known as Exmoor Coast Holidays, but could equally be called Caffyns Farm Campsite (someone there must have an A-level in Marketing or something!) this is a great, relaxed campsite, set right on the moorlands, close to the coast. We stayed here out of season, but the owners were more than welcoming. The site is a "lumpy bumpy" rustic affair, but the ground soft for pegs and the grass thick for sleeping. Fires are welcome, and the site provides "bins" of rocks dotted about to build your own pit, and firebeaters/sand in case of accidental spread. The (free) shower/loo facilities are these super-futuristic, german built "pods" about twice the size of a portaloo, which acts as a toilet/wet room all in one. They are a wee walk from the furthest corner of the field (where we camped) but still no bother. They were just installing better road/low level lighting when we stayed, and the owner talked us through a number of improvements they were making, which I imagine are in place by now. You will in all likeliness wake up one morning with a sheep outside your tent too, because though the hedges tall, and the gates strong, every day one of two of them appeared to be able to scout though into the campsite! There is no site reception/shop style facility either, you knock on the farm door, give them some money, and then you're on your own!

Even better if....
This is another exmoor classic approach road campsite. If it's wet, be prepared to have to hose your car down, it's a working farm site, so it can be a bit muddy. Some people might dislike the nearest shop being 5 miles away. Didn't bother us at all though as we travel prepared! Other than that, there's nothing to dislike about this site, I'd return in a heartbeat!
