Welcome to Hendre Caravan & Camping

Camping and Caravan site within walking distance of Betws-y-Coed
** Closed due to building work. **

This peaceful Caravan & Camping Site is now under new ownership. It location in Betws-y-Coed is makes it an ideal location from which to travel to all parts of Snowdonia and North Wales either by bus, train or your own vehicle.

You will receive a warm welcome from the owners.

The park is mainly for tent and also caters for caravans and motor homes.

Artist flocked to the village of Betws-y-Coed in the 19th century drawn by the stunning natural views that offered the visitor an ever changing panorama of forests, rivers, lakes and mountains. The paintings soon brought people from all parts of the UK and so one of the first tourist destination was born.

Not only is the countryside around Betws-y-Coed ideal for enjoying but for being active in; walking, cycling, mountain biking, canoeing, horse riding are just some of the activities that are available.

Tree Top Adventure is a high level adventurous journey through the trees that involves negotiating a series of obstacles. Participants are fitted with a harness and helmet and attached to a safety line.

Llechwedd Slate Caverns

Llechwedd Slate Caverns of Blaenau Ffestiniog is part of a living, working slate mine still being worked to this day by Greaves Welsh Slate - since 1836.

We offer 2 unique underground tours that take you deep underground to explore the world of the Victorian slate miner. The temperature underground is an ambient 54F making the caverns ideal for a family day out - come rain or shine.

Plenty of all year surface facilities to enjoy - shop, cafe, slate workshop (with daily demonstrations) plus the Victorian Village (April-September) with its traditional tavern and old fashioned sweet shop.

Bodnant Garden

Bodnant Garden is one of the most beautiful gardens in the UK, covering some 80 acres and situated above the River Conwy on ground sloping towards the west and looking across the valley towards the Snowdonia range.

The Garden has two parts. The upper area, around the Hall, consists of formal lawns and herbaceous borders, magnificent Italiante Terraces featuring buttressed walls and brick paths, curved steps and pergolas, the Pin Mill and Lily Ponds.

The lower area, known as The Dell is formed by the valley of the River Hiraethlyn and contains the Pinetum and Wild Garden, where 200-year old trees tower above azaleas, hydrangeas and hosters.

The season commences in March with wonderful displays of Magnolias and Camellias, and carpets with carpets of golden Daffodils. Gorgeous Rhododendrons and Azaleas flower profusely from mid April to late May, whilst the stunning 55 metre Laburnum Arch is a spectacular sight from around the third week of May until early June. Throughout the summer months the Garden looks delightful with colourful displays of roses, water lilies, clematis, eucryphia, hydrangeas and glorious herbaceous borders. This is followed by amazing autumn colours and berries in October.

The Welsh Mountain Zoo

Set in North Wales, high above Colwyn Bay with panoramic views and breathtaking scenery, its beautiful gardens are home to this caring conservation zoo. Roam the wooded pathways, relax on the grassy slopes and spend a lovely day learning about many rare and endangered species from Britain and around the world.

Conwy Valley Railway Museum

The Conwy Valley Railway Museum was originally formed by Alan Pratt in the early 70s with a small exhibition in one of the standard gauge bogie coaches. And the facility of a MK1 coach as a small Café providing tea, coffee and biscuits. The carriages being left on a section of one of the sidings in the old goods yard of Betws y Coed station.

Trefriw Woollen Mills.

At Trefriw Woollen Mills traditional Welsh bedspreads and tweeds are manufactured from the raw wool. Most of the textile machinery is over 50 years old and is powered by electricity generated by vintage turbines.

Tourist Information

Fairy Glen Betws-y-Coed

Fairy Glen One of the principal natural attractions of the village, and where Wuhelmina Stitch, "waits and waits, to see the fairy men.
Located only a short distance from Beaver bridge, a combination of rapids and cascades on the Conwy river are chanelled into a narrow ravine presenting an impressive and dramatic scene. Wooded banks and rock walls clothed with vegetation add to the charm. Fairy Glen is reached by a path from Fairy Glen Hotel beside the A470.

Swallow Falls Betws-y-Coed

Towns and Villages of Snowdonia

The remoteness provided a hiding place for the last true prince of Wales, Llewelyn ap Gruffydd in 1277 during his final battle with Edward I and it is from here Owain Glyndwr carried on his valiant struggle against the English in the early 15th century.

The Snowdonia National Park stretches from Conwy in the north to Aberdyfi in the south, taking in not only mountain peaks and thirteenth century fortresses but also ancient wooded valleys and rushing rivers.
SWALLOW FALLS (RHAEADR EWYNNOL) This waterfall on the Afon Llugwy has become a familiar natural celebrity over the past 100 years and has featured on film, postcard and canvas. While its principal viewpoints are situated on the south bank of the Llugwy with the convenience of ample parking along the A5 and within the hotel car park, it is observed far more dramatically if approached on foot along the northern bank.

The Betws y Coed Artists Colony

It was not until the 1770's that the fashion for painting in Wales became widespread. In 1771, Sir Watkins Williams-Wynn who owned the estate of Wynnstay near Ruabon invited the English artist Paul Sandby to travel with him around North Wales. The drawings that Sandby produced were published five years later and inspired by his example many leading artists of the 18th and 19th Centuries came in his footsteps.

Welsh Love Spoons

The young man would spend hours carving the spoon with his own hands, in the hope that the girl would accept it. If the girl accepted the spoon, she would demonstrate her interest in him and they would commence on a relationship, which is the origin of the word 'spooning'.

Young men had a lot of time on their hands during the long winter evenings, and while some would turn to poetry or composing songs, others would carve all kinds of things such as kitchen utensils or toys for the children from spare pieces of wood.

It is easy to imagine a young man after a hard day's work, in a period of no radio or television or cars, spending his leisure time during dark evenings carving a spoon for the girl he loved. Spoons could also suggest food on the table, and a cosy family life, which would impress on the girl his ability to care for her and a family.
