Welcome to Ivy Grange Farm Yurts

Our aim - low impact glamping

We are Nick and Kim Hoare and we moved to Ivy Grange Farm in the Suffolk countryside three years ago from London. We are working hard to offer you the best yurting experience possible, based on our years of camping holidays (a good combination of an enthusiastic camper married to a one who likes his luxuries in life!). We love the beautiful Suffolk countryside around our home at Ivy Grange Farm, we love being under canvas and our aim with Ivy Grange Farm holidays is to combine the best of both. We have created a space for relaxed holidays that allow our guests to unwind in an rural environment offering a gateway to some of the best of Suffolk - whether that be the excellent nearby beaches of Southwold and Walberswick; the outstanding local produce; estuary walks; great pubs and restaurants; bird-spotting; shopping; visiting gardens and galleries or exploring the lanes by bike. All this with an experience of the best that camping, or glamping if you must, has to offer - including a (hot) two-person woodland shower, barbecues, blueberry bushes and strawberries in the meadow for you to eat to your heart's content as well as comfy beds!

We hope you'll come to stay and enjoy what we love about the area, and want to come again.

Glamping

Ivy Grange Farm offers the best combination of the camping experience – from waking up under canvas to sitting round your own campfire toasting marshmallows – with luxury and fun, otherwise known as Glamping. Whether you love camping and are looking to spoil yourselves, or you’re someone who doesn’t do air mattresses, you won’t be disappointed!

The double-beds, fairy lights, wood-burning stove, hand-painted furniture and deckchairs give each yurt its own individuality and character whilst the Woodland showers (the outdoor hot water double shower) are an experience not to be missed. The safari kitchen (gas hobs under a roofed shack with windows looking out on to the meadow) offers a practical and fun solution to cooking in windy or rainy weather! The recently renovated 17th century barn offers a great space for table tennis (we have a full sized table) and table football, as well as comfy armchairs and an ever-expanding collection of books.

Cook yourselves a tasty meal, whilst relaxing on your yurt’s spacious decking or, if you prefer, the courtyard area outside the barn is a great place to enjoy a bar-b-q, and is a fantastic space for groups of friends or families taking the whole site to celebrate special occasions.

Ivy Grange Farm is a great place just to relax, sitting on your decking watching the world go by, doing things at camping pace. Once you’ve recharged your batteries, there are bikes to borrow if you fancy exploring the local lanes or heading for the coast, lots of great seaside and riverside pubs to visit, plenty of activities to interest children, local canoe and boat hire, good river and sea swimming and much, much more. We’ve got lots of info here, maps and cycle route planners to borrow and we’re always happy to recommend!

We have set out to create the type of place we’d love to stay at and we’d love you to come and try it for yourselves! After all, what could be better, as the sun goes down, than sitting round your campfire watching the bats skim the field or, as the stars come out, listening to the tawny owls start their calling.

Facilities

All the yurts are furnished with a comfy double bed, proper mattresses as well as fold-out singles; there are also easy chairs, table, chest of drawers etc. The yurts all have a rechargeable lantern and solar powered fairy lights (a great hit with the kids), as well as tea lights. There are electrical sockets in the barn for re-charging phones, laptops etc. On the raised decking there are chairs and a table for eating al fresco, and next to each yurt there’s a barbecue and with a calor gas cooker and cooking area. Our 'safari style' kitchen is up and running if you want to cook under cover; there are views out across the field, so you can still keep an eye on what's happening. You will be able to make anything from an early morning cup of tea to an elegant evening meal, taking advantage of the excellent local produce and speciality food shops and suppliers. And of course, we have fruit and vegetable beds in the field so that you can pick or dig your own if you want to - there is no charge for this and we very much hope you'll enjoy the delights home grown produce. The strawberries, raspberries and blueberries have been fantastic and the joy of unearthing new potatoes and putting them straight in the saucepan is unbeatable (well, for us at least). And why not pick some fresh mint from the herb trough to throw in the pot? In the barn there's an electric kettle, toaster and toasted sandwich-maker just in case you're feeling lazy!

Each yurt has its own space for an open fire too, and we’ve provided a cook pot for those who fancy having a go at campfire cooking!

In the barn there are armchairs, table football, table tennis, books, maps, kettle, fridge-freezer, charging points for phones or laptops as well as WiFi.

"The Old Cowshed" adjacent to the barn houses the brand new toilets, showers, basins, mirrors and washing up facilities, with plenty of hot water from the solar panels on the stable roof (backed up by an immersion heater for those occasional overcast days). And tucked away beneath the rowan tree you’ll find the double outdoor shower heated by solar thermal in a wooded area well screened by willow fencing. Take a warm moonlit shower, or a morning refresher whilst the bullfinches whistle away in the ash tree overhead.

What should you bring?

The yurts and kitchens are fully equipped with duvets and pillows, tables, chairs, rechargeable lantern and cooking equipment. Definitely bring a torch or two as well as crocs/flip-flops or wellies for walking through the dewy grass in the morning (useful too for the occasional wet day) and slippers or thick socks for wearing inside the yurt. Remember to bring sheets, pillow cases and towels if you haven't booked them from us. Something warm for sitting out in the evening (it can get quite cool once the sun has gone down) that you won’t mind smelling of wood smoke if you indulge in a campfire. Other than that, pretty much what you’d take for a stay in the country. Swimming things if you fancy a trip to Southwold or Walberswick, or any of the nearby wild swimming spots (ask us for advice!) or if you want to retain your modesty in the woodland showers.

Things to do

These are some of our favourite spots and things to do locally - and look at the individual tabs opposite for more ideas and photos.

We're a gentle 10 mile drive or cycle from the beaches of Southwold and Walberswick - good fun whatever time of year. Catch the ferry across the river and do both in one day! If you already know Southwold and Walberswick, you will already be sold on them and, if you don't, you'll be surprised at what you've missed. Walberswick is our favourite place for sea swimming - it has a gently shelving sandy beach and tends to be the best beach for kids - and the dunes are fabulous. Children will not let you leave without having attempted to catch a crab, an ever popular entertainment throughout the summer (with the fatest crabs around). Southwold has the newest pier in England with the quirky Under the Pier Show of weird and wonderful mechanical machines by Tim Hunkin as well as great fish and chip restaurants, a lighthouse to climb and stacks of independent shops. Not to mention the Adnams Brewery tour.

Also close to home, Latitude in July is one of the many Arts festivals and events in the area, a gentle 4-mile cycle ride.

One of our favourite wild swimming spots is just downstream from The Locks Inn at Geldeston. You can join the locals in jumping from the bridge (should you dare) or clamber down the bank and swim amongst the reeds and wildlife. Have lunch or a drink at the pub afterwards. Big Dog Ferry will take you to Geldeston from Beccles (with bikes if there's space or you call ahead to book) and is a great outing.

Possibly one of the best nurseries in the country, Woottens of Wenhaston is the place to go if you enjoy flowers and all things garden related.

The Blythe Estuary is a great place to visit in any season, following the river as it meanders down towards Walberswick and Southwold. In autumn, you might be lucky enough to see a murmuration of starlings (in an area that’s not short of wildlife) and you will generally hear curlews calling and, when the tide is out, thousands of gulls, waders, oyster catchers and seabirds on the huge mudflats. Down by the quay, you can stop at the shacks to buy fish straight off the boats.

Orford Ness is a wild and mysterious place to explore, from Easter till late October. It’s accessible only by ferry boat, courtesy of the National Trust. Once you’ve visited the Ness, be sure to take in Pinney’s of Orford’s shop for wonderful seafood.

Canoeing
You can hire old fashioned Canadian canoes from the Outney Meadow Campsite who also have bikes for hire. We'd recommend this stretch of the river if you are a beginner or nervous about canoeing, or have small children on board.

Rowan Craft near the Locks Inn at Geldeston is great if you are a bit more confident about canoeing (though there's not a lot to it!) and has the benefit of allowing you to paddle to the pub and moor up for some refreshment before heading back again.

If you like your canoeing slightly more adventurous, try Iken Canoes south of us near Aldeburgh - a beautiful spot for exploring by canoe.

Cycling
Sustrans/Cycle Route 1 runs past the front gate. We have cycle maps available to borrow as well as local OS maps. Whether you are a novice or an addict, it’s a good place to explore on two wheels - it’s relatively flat and the lanes are very quiet. Bring your own bike/s or borrow ours from the barn (or if you’d like something more sophisticated, there’s cycle hire available in Bungay).

There's a new cycle route opened up from Beccles to Southwold, Route 31, and is included as one of 5 cycle Routes of the Waveney Valley and Sunrise Coast maps that cover our area.

If you fancy exploring the Broads by bike, there’s a useful document here with lots of information about transport links. And of course we’re just two-and-a-bit miles from Brampton Station so you can get up to Beccles and Lowestoft by train or head south to pedal around the southern part of Suffolk, including market towns such as the ever popular Woodbridge.

Eating and drinking
The Racehorse Inn, Westhall - good for local food and drink with a very friendly atmosphere (and dog). Just a mile down the road, you could walk or cycle.

St Peter’s Brewery - a local brewery with fantastic pub food at lunchtime and a more formal dinner in the evening in beautiful 15th-century moated surroundings. You’ll find it nestling in The Saints.

The Queen’s Head, Bramfield, is deservedly award-winning. You need to book.

Baileys of Beccles is a great deli during the day and is now open for Spanish inspired eating in the evening. Highly recommended!

The Ship at Dunwich is well worth a visit for the good locally sourced seasonal produce as well as the proper pub interior and good friendly service - there's a lovely open fire in winter and a big terraced garden in the summer. It gets busy though in the height of the season.

Wissett Wines is an interesting local vineyard which is open daily and offers tours as well as (pre-bookable) tastings. Check out the alpacas too!

The Queen’s Head at Blyford has been a real treat with great food, specialising in well cooked and imaginatively presented local food and is well worth trying, especially their "Iffits" boards! The pub is just up the road from Woottens of Wenhaston which is a fantastic plant nursery and definitely worth a visit.

The Castle Inn at Bungay has good food and themed food evenings.

A visit to Walberwick should definitely include a visit to The Bell Inn, which is a very easy place to drop in for food or a drink.

Swimming
Wild-swimming

For fans of Roger Deakin’s book Waterlog, there are a couple of places mentioned in the book that are within easy reach: you can swim in the River Waveney at Outney Meadow just on the edge of Bungay, and at the Locks Inn at Geldeston (one of our favourite places to swim). There’s great sea swimming at nearby Covehithe (where you can also see at first hand the eroding coastline) at Southwold and Walberswick and slightly further afield at Dunwich.

Not-so-Wild-swimming

If you prefer your swimming a bit more cultivated, there is an indoor pool at Bungay and the newly re-opened Lido at Beccles, down by the river.

Directions

Train: we are happy to collect you from Brampton or Halesworth Station (trains run every hour from London Liverpool Street to Lowestoft (connecting at Ipswich). Advance booking secures some very attractive train fares and you can bring your bike.

Bike: If you would like to cycle, we have tried to ensure that we have just about everything here that you’ll need for your stay – all bedding, towels, kitchen equipment etc, and we can arrange to get some basic provisions for when you arrive (milk, bread etc). Tony's Stores is just over a mile away in the village for everyday food needs, as well as the pub!

Car: if you are driving, we are within easy reach of the A12, running along the East Coast, or the M11, following a cross-country route through Bury St Edmunds and Diss. See the directions above.
