Layhead Farm Holiday Cottages

- for all seasons, for all reasons

Layhead Farm Holiday Cottages comprises an 18th Century farmhouse together with its stone barns, which have been carefully converted into comfortable, self catering holiday accommodation in the YORKSHIRE DALES and are of a very high standard.

Tucked away down a private and secluded lane, Layhead Farm lies close to the village centre of Rathmell, near SETTLE. Here walled fields stretch up to rugged moors and fells or down through the lush meadows of the River Ribble Valley.

This is a particularly quiet, placid place, yet only three miles from the market town of Settle with its shops, restaurants and pubs.

Each cottage has stunning views over the rolling countryside and provides the all year round ideal base from which to explore some of the finest unspoilt natural beauties in England; those of the Yorkshire Dales and the Forest of Bowland.

Layhead Farm Holiday cottages are owned by Rosemary Hyslop who, with her late husband Tim, farmed the surrounding land until 2001. Over a period of 17 years the cottages have been developed from original farm buildings into first class, self catering holiday accommodation with an emphasis on hospitality.

Rosemary lives near the cottages at Field House and makes sure that all ages have an enjoyable stay, which is proven by the amount of times visitors return to Layhead Farm.

Look through our website and visit the individual cottages, all provided with modern amenities, linen and towels. The cottages are very flexible in that they provide the perfect base for two people up to large groups or for family celebrations.

All cottages on site are WiFi enabled. Please contact Rosemary for a voucher to use this service.

Craggs Barn Holiday Cottage, converted from a large original stone dales barn retains many of the original features such as exposed stonework and oak beams and sleeps 5 persons in two bedrooms.

The cottage benefits from an open fire in the lounge and electric heating throughout, there is a TV and DVD.

The fully fitted kitchen has an electric cooker, microwave, dishwasher, fridge freezer and all mod cons.

The holiday cottage shares a cobbled courtyard to the front; the small garden at the rear provides splendid country views towards Pen-y-Ghent. The cottage has laundry facilities and a mobile barbecue. Access is via a private drive.

Cobblestones Holiday Cottage, sleeps 5 in two bedrooms. The fully fitted kitchen has an electric cooker, microwave, dishwasher, fridge freezer and all mod cons.

The cottage benefits from an open fire in the lounge and electric heating throughout; there is a TV and DVD in the lounge.

The cottage shares a cobbled courtyard to the front with Craggs Barn, and the small rear garden has splendid views of the countryside towards Pen-y-Ghent.

The cottage has laundry facilities and a mobile barbecue. Access is via a private drive.

Marshfield Holiday Cottage, is an original stone barn converted to retain many of it's original features. The barn sleeps 6, with twin bedroom and shower room on the ground floor. The first floor has been converted to provide a house bathroom, twin bedroom and a gallery double bedroom, which provides views both up and down the River Ribble valley.

The cottage is fully centrally heated. The main living area, which is open to the original timbered roof, has a central open fire. The lounge area has TV and DVD. The fully fitted kitchen has an electric cooker, microwave, dishwasher, fridge freezer. From the lounge, French windows lead onto a sunny separate dining conservatory with open views across the River Ribble valley to the village of Long Preston and the hills beyond. This leads onto the patio and garden with timber furniture and barbecue.

Access to the cottage is by a private drive; parking is alongside the cottage. There are full laundry facilities.

The Stables Holiday Cottage,
The Stables holiday cottage, has a private driveway and is situated a quarter of a mile from the other holiday cottages, across from Rosemary's own home.

Converted from the house stables, with two imaginatively furnished spacious en-suite bedrooms, one twin and one double. Each bedroom has colour TV and tea/coffee making facilities. Downstairs is a cosy lounge with TV and DVD, patio doors and open views, drying area and laundry facility. Full central heating. Outside there is a patio and small garden - a quiet, peaceful place to sit, eat and drink. A mobile barbecue is available.

Mickleden Holiday Cottage, is an innovatively converted farm building, which can offer a combination of holiday accommodation tailored to suit the needs of 2 to 11 persons. This cottage is ideal for groups and celebrations as each generation can participate in the fun and still enjoy some privacy of their own - all within the same cottage.

Let as a whole Mickleden provides 5 bedrooms, 2 with en-suite facilities as well as a house bathroom and separate shower room.

In addition the property benefits from 2 kitchens, 2 lounges and 2 patios. The dining area comfortably seats 11 persons.

Mickleden can also be let as three individual units or as a combination.

Crabapple Cottage, sleeps two persons in one bedroom. Converted from an existing barn to include an en-suite wet room providing level access to shower, WC and WHB. This cosy, south facing cottage has an airy living/dining/kitchen room with modern appliances, dining table and comfortable furniture. The original barn doorway makes a lovely arched window and the original beams can still be seen.

Views across the open fields from both the lounge and the bedroom are breathtaking. The bedroom has choice of either twin beds or a Super King double bed (we need advance notice with the booking form which option you would prefer) and plenty of storage space.

Outside there is a private South facing patio looking over open fields. Also provided are a garden table and chairs and a private car parking space.

Garden Cottage, is exactly as its name suggests because it is situated within the Georgian walled garden of Field House, which is separated from, but nearby to the other cottages. It has its own private access, parking, patio and stunning views across open meadows on the South side and a large, beautiful private garden facing West.

The cottage (sleeps 2 persons in one bedroom) benefits from a well equipped, modern kitchen including fridge freezer, microwave and dishwasher, sunny lounge-dining room, first floor en-suite (bath & shower), separate WC, bedroom with beautiful views of open fields and the garden.

There is the option of twin beds or a super-king size double bed, but we need advance notice with your booking form of which option you would prefer.

Caravan Site

Layhead Farm CL (certified location site) is a quiet secluded five van site. There are magnificent views of the surrounding countryside with sheep and cows in the adjoining fields and a view of Pen-y-Ghent, one of the Yorkshire Three Peaks, through the trees on the north side of the site.

The site has the benefits of electric hook-up, hard standing, drinking water and sewage disposal point. Caravan guests are also very welcome to use some of the Layhead Farm cottage facilities such as the games room, children's playground and The Trading Post (formerly Rosemary's Shop). It is also possible by arrangement with Rosemary to use the facilities in the laundry room.

Layhead Farm CL site is within easy reach of the market town of Settle (4 miles) for supermarkets, pubs, restaurants and local shops. A varied array of market stalls adorns the centre of Settle on a Tuesday.

On Site Facilities

The Trading Post
Welcome to the Trading Post. Formerly Rosemary's Shop, the Trading Post still stocks local produce and goodies from the Yorkshire Dales as well as our own delicious homemade preserves - plums from the plum tree by Layhead Farmhouse plus soft fruit from Rosemary's garden.

Produce and groceries can be ordered from The Trading Post either by phone, email or post, before you leave home ready for your arrival at your cottage, and items can also be purchased during your stay.

If you order when you get here, armchair shopping works like this! Each visitor is given a shop order form upon arrival where you can chose from a wide range of produce. Place your order in the Layhead post box near the laundry before 8pm then your goodies will be delivered to your cottage by 9am the following morning. Payment for the goods is due upon delivery please unless arranged otherwise.

You can also purchase eco-friendly Farm Stay shopping bags. They are large with strong handles and have many uses including carrying your shopping!

Games Room and Playground
Enjoy our spacious games room. Challenge your family members to a pool tournament or table tennis match or for footy fans, a table top football game. There is a wide range of children's toys to keep the younger members of the family entertained or if you prefer, you can borrow one of the many books or magazines. There is also a well stocked information board with ideas for trips out.

Layhead Farm Cottages has a wonderful child friendly playground with swings and a climbing frame. For little train enthusiasts there is also a static wooden train. Also, a picnic table where you can sit and enjoy the sun, or why not watch the football games where participants between 1 and 80 plus have joined in 'needle' matches there over the years?

Local Walks

The walks in our area of the Yorkshire Dales abound. There is every grade of walk from easy strolls to serious long distance hikes. There are short walks from Layhead Farm Cottages, maps and directions available in cottages. There are some longer featured walks in the Yorkshire Dales area.

The Three Peaks - Pen-y-Ghent, Ingleborough and Whernside - 24½ miles walk, and the start at Horton-in-Ribblesdale is only 6 miles away from Layhead Farm Cottages. A fun and challenging day out, but many visitors to Layhead Farm Cottages do limit themselves to one peak per day during their holiday!

Ribbleway - The Ribble Way runs from the rivers source in the Yorkshire Dales to its mouth beyond Preston, and you can walk part of this route from Layhead Farm Cottages as the route runs through the farm.

Dalesway - The Dales Way runs from Ilkley, West Yorkshire to Bowness, Windermere and runs through the Wharfdale area

A65 LEEDS - SKIPTON - KENDAL

10 miles from Skipton after passing through the village of Long Preston.
2 miles north of Long Preston
At the first roundabout take the first exit off onto Settle by-pass - Kendal
After 1 mile look for first turning left under railway bridge signposted Rathmell and Wigglesworth
** 2 miles to village of Rathmell
On entering the village pass church on the left
Continue through village passing horse equestrian centre on left. Just past the de-restriction speed sign see Layhead Farm Cottages sign on the right
Continue up the tarmac lane and follow signs for the appropriate cottage

10 miles south of Ingleton
Pass pub CRAVERN ARMS on left and continue along Settle by-pass for a quarter of a mile
See sign for Rathmell and Wigglesworth and turn right from the by-pass under the railway bridge
