Pistyll Rhaeadr
The highest waterfall in Wales

Pistyll Rhaeadr is an enchanting waterfall in the Berwyn Mountains, just inside Wales, west of Oswestry and Shrewsbury.
At 240ft (80m) high it is the UK tallest single drop waterfall. This much-loved waterfall captivating all who visit her. People have returned, generation after generation to take in the spirit and presence of this Special place. Many visitors mention how quickly they come to a sense of peace and reverence within themselves, seldom found in today's busy and fragmented world It is a great place to explore the Berwyn Mountains and surrounding hills, with many walks on all levels to suit a variety of walkers.
Tan-y-Pistyll – meaning little house under the waterfall is where the tea room and B/B accommodation is located, here we can supply a welcome cup of tea, snack , or meal with a lovely view of the waterfall from the outside garden seating, or when its colder a warm log fire to sit by.
The Retreat campsite office is located in the barn - lower car park. For those able to spend longer time here, let this hidden pearl refresh and restore you, allowing a quality of nurturing and stopping time to be experienced.

Visiting Pistyll Rhaeadr

Pistyll Rhaeadr Is open to the public throughout the year and there is no charge for access to the falls. All donations for upkeep of the site are gratefully received, with a box beside the gate

It's a great place for a half-day visit. A walk in the mountains makes for a fine full day out.
Parking, We make a charge of £2 for the car park There is an overnight charge if cars are left here. All revenues go towards conservation projects around the site.

Walks A short walk from the car park through the gate near the tea room takes you to the base of the waterfall. Here there is an Iron bridge that crosses the river which take you over to the woodland walks and public footpath.
Top of the falls is reached by a public foot path which takes about 20 minutes .Please note this is a mountaineering environment and can be difficult in wet weather, best done with good walking shoes. Keep children and dogs under good control and supervision at all times, especially at the top of waterfall.

The falls have not been 'tamed' with concrete, safety railings and warning signs,
It is a natural in its beauty as God intended it to be!

Walks from the falls

Four different walks are given here:

1. To the top of the waterfall (not far, some climbing - track or rough steps)
2. The Berwyn Ridge walk (energetic high climb, 7 miles, needs right footwear and weather)
3. The Old Lead & Silver Mines (3 miles, moderate, along paths)
4. Llyn Lluncaws (4 miles, moderate climbing along track)

Tan-y-Pistyll Cafe

The restaurant and tearoom has a very cosy and rustic appearance, with many of the original 18th Century features still in existence today.

The atmosphere is often described as homely and easygoing, a place where many a good meal and conversation has been enjoyed.
Whether taking Sunday lunch with us, drinking hot chocolate around the log fire in winter, or ice-creams and drinks outside on the picnic benches in summer, one thing that is always commented on is the friendliness that is found in this place.
The restaurant seats 38 people indoors and we have outdoor bench seating for about the same number. We have a pagoda outside overlooking the waterfall.

We have created an extensive menu to cater for the large range of visitors who come to Pistyll Rhaeadr.

The menu's variety includes breakfasts, sandwiches, baked potatoes, snacks, as well as main course meals and chef's special menu, with a dessert menu to follow.

We provide an ice cream window in the summer. We try to provide healthy options and cook on a home-made basis as much as possible.

Sadly Biggles our much loved St. Bernard died of old age in October 2009. He will probably be remembered by thousands of our visitors.

Bed and Breakfast

Tan-y-Pistyll means 'little house under the waterfall'.

We are situated in our own parkland setting of 120 acres, which encompasses the Pistyll Rhaeadr waterfall complex and retreat camping ground.

The scenery is breathtaking, surrounded on both sides by sheer cliffs and woods. The building was listed in a survey that was carried out in 1724. It was reported to be owned a local abbey and was probably used as a remote retreat cell.
The bed and breakfast is very popular, with many return visitors. We offer a family-run establishment that is warm, accommodating and friendly.

The upstairs has been renovated and we can now offer two en-suite double bedrooms for B&B or as a self-contained holiday unit, with adjoining kitchen, lounge and private balcony
Bed and Breakfast £85.00 per room (based on two people sharing),
single occupancy is £60.

Forty pounds deposit required on booking.
Holiday let (sleeping up to 5) from £140 per night.
For stays of more than 2 nights please ask for price.

Thanks to our central location in Mid-Wales we are often used as a base for people (especially walkers) from which to tour many parts of Wales. There are a huge number of visitor attractions within an hour's drive.

The ground floor contains a rustic-style cosy restaurant and tearoom offering good home cooked meals every day of the week, all year round. Opening hours are adjusted to the time of year. Both facilities can remain open later than usual to suit guests, if requested.

Camping & Caravans

The Retreat Campsite at Pistyll Rhaeadr is set amongst one of the most beautiful and scenic landscapes in Wales. It is situated a stone's throw away from the majestic Rhaeadr waterfall (one of the seven wonders of Wales).
It caters for both campers and caravanners through a private membership scheme which is also available to recognised groups.

The site is located at the end of a valley on mostly flat pastureland with the Rhaeadr River flowing through the centre.

Whether coming alone or with family, all users share one thing in common; they use Pistyll Rhaeadr as a retreat, to get away from the stresses of everyday life.

As a member you are invited to share this very special place so that you may experience its presence and peace. Being a member means being respectful, being responsible for your behaviour and actions, and abiding by the campsite rules..

Please respect the retreat nature of this site by refraining from alcohol during your stay with us. The lower camp fields have been set aside for full retreat workshops throughout the year, including regular monthly retreats

Campsite Rules

It is really important for safety and people's enjoyment to adhere to these rules:
FAMILIES: look after your children at all times, give them limits - this is a mountain environment.
CAMPFIRES: be responsible for your tent and your neighbours, become aware of fire points, keep fires low. Do not bring firewood - we supply it.
BEHAVIOUR: no electronic music or radios.
ALCOHOL: there is a no-alcohol policy on this campsite.
REGISTRATION: all campers must register before going onto campsite. Please arrive before 8pm and vacate by 1pm.
GROUPS: we no longer allow group bookings because of the disturbance it can bring to others. Small groups wishing the quietness of retreat can be located in the lower fields - please ask.
When we come to share ourselves with this special place, do not bring the outside world with all its noise and disturbance. Seek in quietness, the peace that can be found here. In honouring and respecting this gift of nature, you respect yourself and others who share this place with you. Touch the Earth lightly and respectfully and once again you may come to live in its sacredness.

Showmans Caravan Retreat

We have for hire a beautifully restored 1940s genuine Showman's Caravan. The perfect solution for a private retreat for a couple or single occupancy.3 nights minimum from £180

Built for one of the old travelling circus families it has recently been lovingly restored and has been located in the lower meadow for privacy and quiet time.
The wagon comprisesa compact kitchen with small 2 ringed gas cooker, fridge, sink, small dining table. Lounge/reclining area (converts to double bed)

Original wood/coal burning range oven, backup electric heater if required.

Retreats & Workshops

Established in 2004 the retreat centre is held within one of the most dramatic and natural locations in Wales; - Pistyll Rhaeadr Waterfall Whether you are planning a facilitated training workshop or professional meeting, sacred gathering or healing retreat, let the falls provide the perfect nurturing environment to support your vision and wellbeing The facilities are customizable to meet the unique needs of your group. Located in the lower meadows, the Retreat centre has been established so that people are able to spend time at the falls, knowing they are held within a very special, private and peaceful environment, which is supportive to their wellbeing, spirit and personal growth The facilities can accommodate and cater for groups from 12 up to 60 people. It has its own fully equipped field kitchen /dining room marquee , seating up to 50 persons in one sitting, with an attached accommodation marquee sleeping up to 20 . There is also washing and shower block with attached Sauna. We have a large, floored and carpeted 55ft teaching yurt, capable of seating up to 100 people
Throughout the year we offer a series of group retreats and events (please see diary)
We invite teachers from all disciplines to work here, who especially appreciate the gifts that can be experienced from working within the heart of nature. We have found over many years how these qualities can dramatically enhance both the teacher's work and the students' experience if engaged with in a sacred way.
For generations this location has been held and revered in the hidden orders of druidic folklore/mystery as one of their most special and sacred locations. Called the Druids Bowl a place of personal inner inquiry of the sacred.

Weddings , Ceremonies and Special Events

Our intention is to help you create a meaningful and memorable day at Pistyll Rhaeadr. We invite you to come and visit us to discuss your ceremony plans.

The waterfall, with a 240ft drop, is the highest in Wales, surrounded by breathtaking scenery with sheer cliffs and woods to either side.

At the foot of the waterfall is Tan y Pistyll, meaning 'little house under the waterfall', which now houses a café and B&B/self-contained apartment. We have a licence to enable civil weddings and partnerships to be conducted at Pistyll Rhaeadr.

The ceremony usually takes place at the Prayer Lodge set in the lower garden, overlooking the river with the magnificent waterfall in the background. Your guests gather in the Prayer Lodge garden around you, to form an intimate setting for your wedding ceremony. As a ceremony location it is truly a unique and special place, allowing and supporting a deep connection between you as you exchange vows.
It is also possible to arrange a Celtic Blessing or Hand-fasting ceremony. This place has been used by many in the past as a place to come for a blessing after a civil ceremony. The hand-fasting would be held in the privacy of the Prayer Lodge and its garden. It can also include following the old custom of planting a tree in remembrance and as a gift to this place. The hand-fasting and/or tree planting can be added to a civil ceremony or held on its own.
It is a gift to have your ceremony here, for your love for each other to be witnessed and blessed by the Spirit of Nature - the Waterfall's presence. There is an opportunity for you and your guests to embrace this throughout the celebration, to be touched by the presence of the waterfall.

After the ceremony we can arrange a buffet reception in the lower garden marquee. We can cater for up to 60 guests with a choice of menus. During winter months the tearoom can be reserved for your reception. For an evening reception/function we can recommend local hotels.

Within the Prayer Lodge, we can offer simple accommodation for you following your ceremony.

You can decorate the Prayer Lodge beforehand with flowers. Ceremonies can be held here between 11am and 3pm. The Prayer Lodge area and garden, if having a reception, are for your sole use on the day of your ceremony until 5pm. During holiday periods (Easter, May Bank Holiday week and school summer holidays) we are able to have ceremonies from Mondays to Fridays. At other times we have ceremonies from Mondays through to Saturdays.

Directions

Travelling north on the A5 west of Telford. Turn left onto B4396 at Nesscliffe, and then go through Knockin. At the junction of main A483 road from Welshpool to Oswestry, cross-straight over (staggered junction) at the White Lion pub at Llynclys. Continue on the B4396 into Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant (approx. 25 minutes).

Travelling south on the A5. Turn off the A5 at Oswestry by-pass onto the A483, signposted Welshpool. After 3 miles, south of Oswestry, turn right at Llyclys crossroads - the White Lion pub is on your right. Continue on the B4396 into Llanrhaeadr (approx. 25 mins).

In Llanrhaeadr, drive through the main square past the Wynstay Arms, and turn right into Waterfall Street just before Greatorex, the corner shop. The waterfall is signposted above the shop. Continue along Waterfall Street for four miles until the road ends at the waterfall.

The road ends in the waterfalls car park, for which there is a £2 charge.

There is a free car park by the river, 250 yards before you reach Pistyll Rhaeadr.

Please be careful and drive slowly along the single-track road from Llanrhaeadr to the falls - it's a small Welsh country lane.
