Welcome to Sands Caravan and Camping Park

Situated on the beautiful west coast of the Highlands of Scotland with unsurpassed views of the Isle of Skye and Outer Hebrides. The ideal location for the holiday of your choice.
Bring your own caravan, motor-caravan or tent and set up where ever you wish in the designated areas, whether you choose a sheltered spot amongst the sand dunes or a raised pitch with unrivalled views, our large spacious site has something for everyone.
For something a bit different why not try our wigwam cabins, a fun alternative and unique holiday experience, camping outdoors with all the comfort of your own heated, wooded wigwam.

Prefer some luxury, then we have five thistle graded holiday caravan homes. All have a spacious living area with attractive soft furnishings where the whole family can relax.
Sands is an ideal base to explore the best of Wester Ross, with the famous Torridon mountains to the south and the world renowned Inverewe Gardens to the north.

For the caravan & camping connoisseurs

The caravan and camping park is run on an informal basis, the site is divided into two main areas one for camping and one for caravan’s. Giving you the freedom to choose your own spot anywhere in the camping or caravan area. Whether you choose a sheltered spot amongst the sand dunes or a spot with a view across the Minch, the choice is yours, on our 55 acre site. Where ever you set up, our award winning beach is a stones throw away. The only restriction we enforce is that you keep a distance of at least 7 metres from your neighbour.

Facilities on site include:
Three toilet and shower blocks, one heated, providing ample facilities. Disabled facilities. 70 electric hook ups, dotted about in caravan and camping area. ELSAN disposal, for the emptying of chemical toilets. Purpose built Motorhome service point.

Wigwams

For those who would like something a wee bit different!

Come and stay in one of our heated wooden wigwams. A fun alternative and a unique holiday experience that gives you that great feeling of being at one with nature, camping outdoors with the comfort of your own heated wigwam. All our wigwams have electric light and a panel heater.

We have 10 wigwams.

Longa and Raasay are smaller wigwams which have a raised platform for sleeping on with a double mattress and a single mattress. They have cushioned seating with a table and electric kettle.
Shiant, Staffin, Scalpay, Harris, Rona, Trodday, Skye and Lewis are larger wigwams which have cushioned seating with a table and electric kettle.

Wigwams are all pet-friendly.

Caravan Holiday Homes

For those who enjoy some home comforts

Our five thistle graded holiday homes are situated on the park with views over the sea to Skye. All our caravans are attractively decorated with spacious lounge, two or three comfortable bedrooms, a well planned kitchen and a bathroom. All rooms are heated, whilst the kitchen has a modern cooker a fridge and a microwave. The bathroom has a shower and plenty of hot water to come home to after a days exploring. All caravans have a digital TV and DVD player

Sands Holiday House

A luxurious house situated with in its own croft in the small crofting township of Big Sand, 4 miles west of Gairloch. Enjoying a raised site providing outstanding views of the Torridon Mountains, Skye and the sandy beach next to the Sands Caravan and Camping Site.

The one and half storey house was built in 2005 and has been luxuriously fitted out for 6 persons comfortably.

Ground Floor
There is under-floor heating throughout the ground floor, a large kitchen diner with southerly facing views, sliding doors leading out onto the garden which has a patio and large bench table to eat out or relax when weather permits. The lounge has a large LCD TV with freeview and home cinema kit, leather seating and a very efficient multi fuel stove which can be used by guests when ever required and wood or coal will be available at no extra cost. There is a bathroom with bath, toilet and wash hand basin and also an en-suite bedroom with king size bed. Also on the ground floor is a utility room with washing machine, sink, freezer and clothes drying pulley.

Upstairs
There are three bedrooms upstairs one with king size bed, one twin bedded and one single bedroom. Also upstairs is a separate walk-in shower, toilet and wash hand basin.

Outside
With a secluded location it has its own driveway, large parking area, washing line area and garden with children’s swing this location is perfect for a luxurious get-away any time of the year.

Discover Wester Ross

Gairloch, a traditional crofting and fishing village, is situated 3 miles from Sands and has much to offer the holiday maker including:

The area surrounding Sands offers many varied and unique activities for the whole family. On the first Saturday of July every year Sands hosts the Gairloch Highland Gathering. With events including a hill race, heavy athletics and a pet parade, as well as a ceilidh and dance at night, it has become an annual highlight for locals and tourists alike and is the ideal opportunity to experience the vibrancy of the Gairloch Area.

Flowerdale Estate, the ancestral residence of the MacKenzies of Gairloch, is an area of outstanding beauty which incorporates a spectacular waterfall, an 18th Century house and plenty of exhilarating walks to suits all ages and abilities. It is also home to Gairloch Trekking Centre, where beginners and more experienced riders can explore the stunning landscape on horseback, improve their riding skills with lessons or even spend a whole day grooming and caring for their own pony.

Beinn Eighe National Nature Reserve, Scotland’s oldest reserve established in 1951, offers woodland trails and mountainous walks, all situated within the ancient pine forests surrounding Loch Maree. Famed for its wildlife you’re likely to spot deer, dragon flies, golden eagles and crossbills, or you may even be lucky enough to see a pair of nesting sea eagles. Loch Maree has many tales and legends surrounding it, and is rumoured to have been a site of importance for Saint Columba. If you visit Isle Maree you can see an ancient wishing tree and visit the graves of a prince and princess, but make sure you keep an eye out for Muc-sheilch, the loch’s very own monster!

Gairloch Golf Club
Open all year round, Gairloch’s 9 hole golf course provides an excellent challenge to golfers of all abilities and holds frequent competitions open to visitors. Their licensed cafe serves meals and drinks, as well as stocking a selection of golfing equipment, and has panoramic views across Gairloch’s beautiful sandy beach towards the Isle of Skye.

Gairloch Harbour is home to many whale watching cruises that can take you around Gairloch Bay and into the Minch to spot whales, dolphins, porpoises, pelagic birds and even basking sharks. In nearby Badachro there are Shellfish Safaris where you can reel in your own creel full of lobsters and prawns, or why not take a trip on one of the many fishing cruises from the harbour that can cater for all ages and abilities.

For rainy days there are plenty of indoor activities too; Gairloch Leisure Centre offers a range of activities including archery, a climbing wall and badminton, and Poolewe Swimming Pool is only a 15-minute drive away. The Perfume Studio at Mellon Charles is Scotland’s only working perfume studio, and also has a cafe, gift shop and excellent views of Loch and Isle Ewe.

In nearby Poolewe the world famous Inverewe Gardens, established by Osgood MacKenzie in 1862, are famed for their exotic and colourful plants that come from countries as diverse as Tasmania, New Zealand and Chile. The gardens are situated in over 2,000 acres of National Trust land which also includes several trails and paths, as well as an onsite cafe and gift shop.

The Gairloch area has many sites of historical interest and our award winning museum explores the area’s history with exhibits including a croft house interior, a replica of a Highland shop and Rua Reidh Lighthouse’s original lens. In nearby Sheildaig the Fairy Lochs walk visits a memorial to a crashed WW2 bomber plane and the Sands Archaeological Trail has examples of prehistoric round houses, turf dikes and old run rig systems. For more information on the area’s history why not buy a copy of J.H. Dixon’s Guide to Gairloch and Loch Maree, available from the museum. Written in 1886 it includes details of the history, superstitions and folklore of the area and is considered by many locals to be a minor classic.

Walking

Gairloch and the surrounding area offer excellent walking opportunities, whether you're looking for a coastal ramble, a Munro or a woodland trail.
With the world famous Torridon mountains only an hour's drive away Sands is ideally situated for those who are interested in more exhilarating and strenuous walks, including the celebrated peaks of Slioch (981 m), Liathach (1055m), Beinn Alligan (986 m) and An Teallach (1062m). The Beinn Eighe National Nature reserve, established in 1951 and incorporating over 48 square kilometres of land, provides a variety of trails including woodland walks that explore the ancient pine forests, as well as opportunities to venture into the mountainous environment of Beinn Eighe.

Other local walks include the Fairy Lochs trail, which takes you to the site of a memorial to a crashed WW2 bomber, Flowerdale Estate, where you can walk to a waterfall through land belonging to the MacKenzie's of Gairloch, and around the stunning headland at Rua Reidh Lighthouse where you can see sea-stacks and nesting sea birds.

Fishing

Sands Caravan and Camping is the ideal base to discover the fishing of Wester Ross. Whether you’re looking for freshwater or sea fishing there’s plenty of choice to suit all ages and abilities, from catching mackerel in the Minch to fishing for the sea trout of famous Loch Maree.

On site Sands Loch, spanning a hectare and home to brown trout, can be fished free of charge by those staying on the campsite and there’s no need for a permit. Sands River also provides sea trout fishing suitable for beginners and with a slipway on site the campsite is the perfect place to launch small crafts and boats.

Within the area the picturesque River Kerry offers the opportunity to catch salmon during the Summer months, and Loch Kernsary, Loch Horrisdale and the Fairy Lochs can all be fished for brown and sea trout. The pier at Gairloch Harbour is a great beginners venue for mackerel fishing and is also home to many sea fishing trips which can take you into the Minch or to the Summer Isles. Nearby Badachro also provides Shellfish Safaris where you can experience the thrill of reeling in creels full of lobsters, prawns and octopus
Most loch and river fishing in the Gairloch Area is governed by the Gairloch Angling Club and permits can be obtained from Gairloch Harbour or the Gairloch petrol station, both of which are only a short distance from Sands. Our on-site shop sells a selection of fishing gear, including rods, weights, floats and lures and for more information why not buy Fishing in the Gairloch Area by David, Lamb and Frost, an extensive study of fishing in the area that’s available in the Sands Campsite shop.

Directions

From Inverness continue North on the A9 until the Tore roundabout after 12miles (20Km). Take the A835 towards Ullapool. Just after Garve in 19miles (31Km) the scenic route by Loch Maree can be taken by branching left onto the A832 and following this road through Achnasheen and Kinlochewe to Gairloch. This is 45miles (72Km). The route to the Sands Holiday Centre is on the B8021. This road branches to the left in Gairloch approximately 1mile (1.5Km) after the pier. This route is shorter but contains a few stretches of single track road where passing places are used to allow oncoming traffic to overtake. They should also be used to allow faster following traffic to overtake.

The other route from Garve is to stay on the A835 until Braemore Junction 20miles (32Km) from Garve. Turn left onto the A832 and follow the road through Aultbea and Poolewe to Gairloch in 55miles (88Km). At the foot of the hill after entering Gairloch the B8021 to the Sands Holiday Centre branches to the right. This route is longer but is all double track road.
