Welcome to Snowdon Base Camp - Cwellyn Arms

WELCOME/ CROESO TO THE CWELLYN ARMS

The Cwellyn Arms is situated in the Village of Rhyd Ddu, at the foot of Mount Snowdon, on the A4085 Caernarfon to Beddgelert road 4 miles from Beddgelert, in the Snowdonia National Park, North Wales.

Rhyd Ddu overlooks the sparkling clear waters of Llyn y Gadair, Llyn Cwellyn and the majestic western slopes of Mt. Snowdon, with two main footpaths, the Rhyd Ddu path and the Snowdon Ranger path starting from the village. There are also several woodland and forest walks within easy reach see ‘local walks’.

The village boasts magnificent uninterrupted views towards Mt. Snowdon and is situated right at the start of the Nantlle Ridge and Mynydd Mawr, popular havens for the hillwalkers of Snowdonia.

We are ideally situated for exploring the whole of Snowdonia and North Wales. There are castles, steam railways and of course the natural beauty of the mountains, valleys and beaches all within easy reach. This area of outstanding natural beauty is an ideal base for walking, climbing, fishing, pony trekking, diving, canoeing, sailing, wind surfing, mountain biking and much, much, more.

We are a family-run traditional country inn and restaurant with varied accommodation, at the foot of Mt. Snowdon. As owners of the Cwellyn Arms for over 30 years, we have experience within the hospitality and restaurant industry and strive to do our utmost to ensure an enjoyable visit or stay.

We offer a warm welcome from our family and friendly staff in a relaxing and informal atmosphere.

Our two lounge areas both have “real” fires, which complete the ambience of Cwellyn Arms.

Our accommodation caters to suit all tastes and pockets, this includes En-Suite Accommodation, Farmhouse Accommodation, Cosy Cottage, Bunkhouse Accommodation and Camping with Camp Fires. See our accommodation pages.

SNOWDON BASE CAMP - GRID REF: 566541

Our campsite is set in a breathtaking location within the Snowdonia National Park, at the foot of Snowdon leading to Cwellyn Lake.

The campsite overlooks Cwellyn Lake and has spectacular uninterrupted views towards Mt. Snowdon and Mynydd Mawr with various forest walks on it’s doorstep. The river Gwyrfai runs alongside both fields to Cwellyn Lake.

There is a boardwalk from the car park to the lake. If you wish to camp in this field there are trolleys by the carpark, which can help transport your equipment down the boardwalk. Please replace the trolley after use.

Picnic benches are available on both fields, these are on wheels to help move nearer to your tent pitch.

We are a traditional mountain campsite, wild and wonderful (get back to nature with the birds and the bees and the bears).

We do have a strict no music policy on site (if you want to listen to music go to a nightclub) and definitely no fireworks. No campfires or barbecues are allowed on the ground.

We feel that a campsite is not a real campsite without a camp fire. We have, therefore commissioned numerous specifically made fire pits (on sleds) for campers use, these do add to the general maintenance of the campsite i.e. cleaning out of the fire pits and complete removal to maintain the ground. In order to continue the provision of fire pits and the extra maintenance involved you have to buy the wood from us.

Bags of logs with kindling and firelighters can be purchased at Cwellyn Arms. No wood can be taken from the forest or campsite or brought in from elsewhere. The Forestry Commission will prosecute anyone from removing wood from the forestry and they will have to leave the campsite immediately.

Our new amenity block is now open and is located on the first field nearby the carpark. It has underfloor heating, free power showers and toilets, vanity units, drinking water fountain, coin operated plugs, hairdryer and outside sinks with drinking water. There are also outdoor sinks with drinking water and a laundry room next to the carpark with commercial washing machine and commercial tumble driers, spin drier and coin operated plugs and hairdryer.

Breakfast, lunch and evening meals can be arranged at Cwellyn Arms with prior notice. We do advise to book as priority is given to residents and bookings.

IS GRAIG COTTAGE

Our cosy cottage is within walking distance of Cwellyn Arms and is an end of terrace property with a large wild garden with spectacular uninterrupted views of Mt. Snowdon and the Welsh Highland Railway.

The cottage is carpeted throughout and fully central heated. Heat, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and emergency lighting are installed. Gas and electricity are included.

All bed linen is provided with basic towels.

There are two bedrooms the larger with a double or twin bed and single bed and the other with two single beds. The bathroom with bath and power shower is accessible from both bedrooms.

The comfortable lounge has a double sofa bed, television and wood burning stove in the inglenook.

The kitchen is well equipped with all major cooking appliances, oven, hob, microwave, fridge with small freezer, kettle and toaster.
There is also a washer/drier and dining area.

All cutlery and crockery is provided.

Breakfast or evening meals can be served at Cwellyn Arms with prior notice.

We do advise to book as priority is given to residents and bookings.

SUITE ACCOMMODATION

Our suite accommodation, otherwise known as Farm 1 is part of Planwydd, a large detached farmhouse, set within 25 acres leading to Cwellyn Lake, approximately
half a mile from Cwellyn Arms (10 – 15 walk).

Planwydd overlooks Cwellyn Lake and has spectacular uninterrupted views towards Mount Snowdon and Mynydd Mawr with various forestry walks on its doorstep.
The Farmhouse is double-glazed and fully centrally heated.

Heat, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and emergency lighting are installed.

Gas and electricity are provided.

All bed linen is provided with basic towels.

The suite accomodation consists of an en-suite bedroom (double or twin) with whirlpool type bath and seperate shower room.

There is a large lounge with television and a double sofa bed and single chair bed.

A new kitchenette has been installed with oven, hob and grill, microwave, fridge and kettle.

All cutlery and crockery is provided.

Breakfast, or evening meals, can be served at Cwellyn Arms with prior notice.

We do advise to book as priority is given to residents and bookings.

PLANWYDD (PLANTATION) - THE FARMHOUSE

Suite and Self-catering accommodation
Planwydd is a large detached farmhouse set within 25acres leading to Cwellyn Lake, aprrox. ½ mile from Cwellyn Arms (10-15 mins walk).

Planwydd overlooks Cwellyn Lake and has spectacular uninterrupted views towards Mt. Snowdon and Mynydd Mawr with various forestry walks on it’s doorstep.

The farmhouse is double glazed and fully central heated. Heat, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and emergency lighting are installed. Gas and electricity are included. All bed linen is provided with basic towels.

There are three parts of Planwydd, which can be let as separately contained units or opened up to provide one large accommodation for up to 18 people.

Main Farmhouse
This accommodation consists of two large bedrooms: one with a double/twin bed and single bed and the other with a double bed and two single beds. The bathroom with bath and power shower is accessible from both bedrooms.

The lounge has an inglenook fireplace with a wood burning stove and television. There is a large fully equipped farmhouse style kitchen with a dining area and a six burner and two oven cooker, commercial microwave, large fridge, large freezer, kettle, toaster and washing machine All cutlery and crockery is provided.

There is also a conservatory, which can serve as a separate bedroom if required, it has a double sofa bed. The French doors from the conservatory lead out onto a patio area with seating.

Farm 1

The suite accomodation consists of an en-suite bedroom (double or twin) with whirlpool type bath and seperate shower room. There is a large lounge with television and a double sofa bed and single chair bed. A new kitchenette has been installed with oven, hob and grill, microwave, fridge and kettle. All cutlery and crockery is provided.

Farm 2

This accommodation consists of an extra large bedroom with a super- king bed (double or twin), and a single chair bed, en-suite with shower and a balcony that overlooks Cwellyn Lake. There is a large lounge which has a double sofa bed and a single chair bed, television and dining area.
There is a downstairs shower and toilet and a fully equipped kitchen with oven, hob, microwave, kettle, toaster and washing machine. All cutlery and crockery is provided. The French doors from the kitchen lead out onto a patio area with seating.

Breakfast or evening meals can be served at Cwellyn Arms with prior notice. We do advise to book as priority is given to residents and bookings.

BUNKHOUSE ACCOMMODATION - GRID REF: 566540

We now have three bunkhouses, which can accommodate different size of groups, all are within the vicinity of our farmhouse and campsite which are approx ½ mile from Cwellyn Arms (10-15 minutes walk).

They overlook Cwellyn Lake with spectacular uninterrupted views of Mt. Snowdon and Mynydd Mawr with various forestry walks on their doorstep’s.

All bunkhouses are fully central heated with heat, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and emergency lighting installed. Gas and electricity are included.

Please bring your own sleeping bag. There is a strict no music policy on site.

The Loft
This is our medium size bunkhouse which is open plan with eight mattresses, mattressed decked, fully fitted kitchen with oven, hob, fridge and freezer, microwave, kettle and toaster. There is a table and chairs for dining. All cutlery and crockery is provided.

There is also separate power shower and toilet.

Sole use can be arranged with a minimum of four persons.

Bwythyn Bach
This is a small detached bunkhouse with 2/3 bunkbeds, it is ideal for two people. It has a shower and toilet, a small baby belling with hob and oven/grill, for basic cooking requirements, small fridge, kettle and sink.

It also has a wood burning stove.

Big Bunkhouse
This bunkhouse is a completely refurbished and extended old stone barn.

The main sleeping area has six sets of bunkbeds (sleeps 12) with two loft areas which are accessed via ladders. The loft areas are mattress decked, one with 6 mattresses and the other with 4 mattresses. The loft areas are not suitable for children.

The communal room has a 12ft picnic bench for dining and eight wall beds.

There are two prep kitchens and a full commercial kitchen with a six burner hob and large oven, large fridge, large freezer, microwave, toaster and kettles. All cutlery and crockery are provided.

There is also a laundry room with a commercial washing machine and two commercial dryers.

There are two power showers and two toilets, a disabled room with two power showers and toilet and a further room with power shower and toilet.

Sole use can be arranged with a minimum of 15 people.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

The Sherpa bus service runs around Mount Snowdon and there is also a new taxi service operating on demand between the car parks of Rhyd Ddu and the nearby village of Talysarn for walking the Nantlle Ridge to enable you to leave only one car at start/finish of route.

We have quality beaches within easy reach and are rich in history with four local Heritage sites in the area i.e. Caernarfon, Conwy, Criccieth and Dolwyddelan.

The Italianette village of Portmeirion is nearby, (as in ‘The Prisoner’), built by Sir Clough Williams – Ellis in 1925.

Our location is ideal for fishingas We sell fishing permits and flies and hire out rods and boats through Seiont Gwyrfai and Llyfni Fishing Society which was formed as far back as 1908. They are situated in the heart of Snowdonia with extensive rights located within the boundaries of the National Park , on 40 miles or so of prime Salmon, Seatrout, Brown Trout rivers and six lakes which can be enjoyed in unrivalled surroundings, see ‘fishing’ for more details.

We are favourably placed for bird-watching all year round. The watercourses within a short vicinity are all part of a Special Area for (Nature ) Conservation! See ‘bird watching’ for more details
The Welsh Highland Railway ‘enables you to journey behind the most powerful 2’ gauge steam locomotives in the world through the most fabulous scenery of the Snowdonia National Park. The railway runs from alongside the awe-inspiring Caernarfon Castle, snaking around seemingly impossible bends, up hard gradients and around the foothills of Snowdon to arrive at Rhyd Ddu, about 12 miles from Caernarfon and high up in the Snowdonian mountains. One of the ‘great little trains of Wales’
There are several trails for mountain bikes and cycles and you can now take your bike on The Welsh Highland Railway train. If, however, you do not wish to bring your bike there are several places to hire bikes for the whole family.

LOCAL FISHING

There is plenty of good fishing around Cwellyn Arms in the lakes of Llyn Cwellyn, Llyn Nantlle and Llyn Dwyarchen, and the Afon (river) Gwyrfai.

Llyn Cwellyn
Situated on the western side of Snowdon and, although skirted by the A4085 Caernarfon to Beddgelert road, this lake is situated in desolate but stunning countryside. Fishing here is truly outstanding, with the free-rising wild Brown Trout rivalling any to be had elsewhere within these islands. The Season here gets underway towards early May as the water is some 200ft higher than Llyn Padarn and takes longer to warm up. Char are also resident here, but are smaller than their Padarn brethren. Two early season favourites dressed on size 14 hooks, are Corff Main (a fly with a quill body and black hackle) and Petrisen Corff Gwin (or the Partridge and Claret). Partridge and Silver, and a Zulu are also suitable.

Llyn Nantlle
From here at the upper end of the Nantlle valley and the gateway to Drws-Y-Coed, the most spectacular views of Snowdon can be experienced. One of only two lakes in Wales where Salmon and Seatrout are regularly caught. Fishing here is strictly controlled and by boat only. Advanced bookings are essential.

Afon Gwyrfai
Flowing from the pewter bowl of Llyn Y Gadair and onwards through Llyn Cwellyn, the Gwyrfai meanders for some 10 miles into the Menai Straits, some two miles south of the Seiont estuary. A beautiful, wild and wooded banked river which provides unforgettable fishing from the open flats at Betws Garmon to Waunfawr where the character of the river changes: here it runs fast and deep, its many islands walled by trees, and at first glance this is worming water, but don’t be deceived - here the wet and dry fly can rule supreme with the many fine rising trout. This is a summer river, but seatrout and salmon can be caught up to the season’s end.
Llyn Dwyarchen
‘The lake of the Turf Island’, so called because of its famous floating island refered to by Giraldus in 1188 AD, one of the trio of lakes which forms the birth of the river Gwyrfai, the others being Cwellyn and Y Gadair. This is the local fishing club’s stocked water, with two monthly introductions of Rainbow and Brown Trout up to 7 lbs in weight. Fishing is by fly only with a 3 fish limit.
