Welcome to West Hook Farm

The small campsite with great sea views

Welcome to West Hook Farm Camp Sitecamping field loking out to seaWest Hook Farm camping is run by the Thomas family. It is a small, family friendly campsite in Pembrokeshire, situated on the Marloes Peninsula, with great sea views across St Brides Bay and direct access onto the coastal path for walking.

The clean basic facilities consist of 8 communal toilets with wash hand basins, 3 showers that work on 50 pence coins (the shower lasts approximately 4 to 5 minutes). There are also 3 washing up sinks with hot water available from 7.00am to 10.00am and also 6.00pm to 10.00pm plus a chemical toilet disposal point.

The site does not have electric hook-ups, but we are more than happy to recharge any type of batteries from car to phone with a charge of 50 pence. We are also a Calor and camping gas stockist.

Pitches

Our campsite can cater for all, whether you are just passing through for a single overnight stay or want to camp with us for a week or more.

There is no need to book, particulary if you are just camping for one night or more.

The site has 30 pitches which are set out over 4 acres of land, plus an additional field is made available at busy times. There is between 6 and 18 metres between pitches depending on position. Some pitches are on a gentle north facing slope.

The gates to the site are closed at 10.00pm each night. Campers arriving after that time can go to the late arrivals field so that people already on site are not disturbed. The gates are re-opened by 7.00am.

Dogs

We do allow dogs on site providing they are kept under control and the owners clean up after them.

Recycling

The Thomas family are big on recycling. There are separate bins for plastic bottles, newspapers and magazines, tins and cans and glass bottles and jars. There is a compost heap for any peelings and organic waste.

The Barn

A dry and sheltered place that contains a number of tables and chairs and is available to use on wet and and windy days.

The barn also contains a number of fridges and freezers for all campers to use. Perfect for keeping your food fresh and your ice packs frozen.

Look out for the swallows nesting in the roof timbers of the barn. They can sometimes be seen flitting in and out of the door during the summer months.

Beaches Near West Hook Farm

Searching For The Perfect Beach

"Pembrokeshire has the world's best beaches" - says Kevin Rushby, who set out with his daughter and a vintage VW campervan to find the ultimate stretch of shore.

"Now we were approaching our destination: West Hook Farm on the Marloes peninsula. This proved to be the best campsite we visited: basic but clean facilities, loads of space, and a glorious clifftop panorama. We jumped into wetsuits and ran 500m along the cliff path to reach Martin's Haven. This is a tiny stony cove best suited to snorkelling and rock-pool exploration. We swam out along the east side and were rewarded by a view of a big edible crab scuttling between the kelp. He evaded our hungry fingers".

Marloes Sands

Marloes Sands - just a half-mile walk from the nearby car park to this magnificent National Trust managed beach, but it’s worth it for the crystal-clear water and dramatic sandstone cliffs, the views of outlying islands, the fossils, rock pools, surf and space. There is good safe bathing when the weather is calm.

Musselwick

Musselwick is just outside the village of Marloes. The beach is completely submerged at high tide but a fine beach of golden sand is exposed at low tide. Access is by footpath across a field and then a fairly tricky path cut into the rocks of the low black gulley that leads on to the beach. Well worth the effort to see and enjoy this wonderful beach.

St Bride's Haven

A pretty cove with bright red cliffs. It has interesting rock pools, safe bathing and good snorkelling, popular too with canoeists exploring the inlets and caves along the coast. Look out for the stone lined coffins exposed by coastal erosion in the cliffs by the lime kiln. Nearby is the St Bride's Estate with attractive parkland that surrounds the Victorian "castle" which once belonged to the Barons of Kensington.

Martin's Haven

Approximately a ten minute walk from the campsite is Martin's Haven. This is where the boat departs to the bird islands of Skomer and Skokholm. Skomer Island is open from 1st April to 31st October. The boat goes everyday (weather permitting) except Monday unless it is a bank holiday. The boat departs from Martin's Haven at 10.00am, 11.00am and 12.00 noon.

If you’re looking for a dive site where only the marine life comes in crowds, Trevor Rees from Dive Magazine suggests a shore dive from Martin's Haven that has an unspoiled charm and plenty to see.

One of the benefits for divers visiting the Skomer Marine Nature Reserve is the resident team of Marine Conservation Officers, all marine scientists and divers. If you are just visiting the Haven then take some time to visit the marine reserve display on the way down to the beach, there are many interactive displays of the amazing marine life to be seen.

Martin's Haven - the Deer Park walkThe National Trust - West Hook FarmWest Hook Farm campsite is situated on the Marloes Peninsula, which is within part of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, and forms the westernmost tip of the southern shore of St Brides Bay.

If you have a couple of hours to spare and want to explore this beautiful peninsula then try this moderate 5 mile circular walk that starts at the campsite and follows the coast path and also explores some of the inland trails across Marloes Mere.

Birdwatching at Marloes Mere

Marloes Mere is a great place for birdwatching. It’s an especially good place to see waterfowl and birds of prey in the winter months. Walk down the lane from the Marloes Sands car park and stop often to look across the wetland. There are two hides overlooking the mere, where you can sit quietly and wait for things to happen.

Pembrokeshire Coast Path - 186 Miles of Breathtaking Coastal Scenery

The Pembrokeshire Coast Path National Trail twists and turns its way through 186 miles of the most breathtaking coastal scenery in Britain. From St Dogmaels in the north to Amroth in the south, the trail covers almost every kind of maritime landscape from rugged cliff tops and sheltered coves to wide-open beaches and winding estuaries.

Lying almost entirely within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park —Britain’s only coastal national park – the trail displays an array of coastal flowers and bird life, as well as evidence of human activity from Neolithic times to the present.

In its entirety the Coast Path represents a formidable physical challenge - its 35,000 feet of ascent and descent is said to be equivalent to climbing Everest — yet it can also be enjoyed in shorter sections, accessible to people of all ages and abilities, with the small coastal villages strung out along its length offering welcome breaks and added enjoyment.

Opened in 1970, the Pembrokeshire Coast Path was the first National Trail in Wales. 75% lies within designated conservation sites and 85% within the boundaries of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.

As well as offering walkers spectacular coastal scenery and wildlife, the Trail also passes through a landscape in which humans have lived for centuries and which they too have helped shape. This is an area largely forged out of the activities of fishing and farming, as shown by the small, coastal settlements and the farmed landscape. These villages were not just providers of food, they also linked Pembrokeshire to what was, in the days before road and rail, the major highway of the sea.

MarloesAlong the path you can see many reminders of this maritime tradition from the Neolithic cromlechs and Iron Age promontory forts to the churches and chapels of the seafaring early Celtic saints and their followers. The Vikings took interest in the area, reflected today in a legacy of place names such as Goodwick near Fishguard and the islands of Skomer and Skokholm.

Throughout the length of the 186-mile trail small quays, lime kilns and warehouses, and sites like the brickworks at Porthgain in North Pembrokeshire, are reminders of a industrial tradition, although little remains today of Pembrokeshire’s once prosperous anthracite coalfield in the south.

Skomer Island

Skomer IslandFrom the Deer Park on the headland at Wooltack Point, just above the campsite, you can look westward to Skomer, one of West Wales' most picturesque islands, with its stunning and varied wildlife. From a sea strewn with rafts of guillemots, razorbills and puffins, to exposed headlands, towering offshore rocks and sheltered inlets, home to the birds and mammals of this amazing island Nature Reserve.

Martin’s Haven

Just 10 minutes walk along the coast path from the campsite is Martin’s Haven, from here a 50-seater passenger boat, the Dale Princess, transports visitors to the Island. The Dale Princess, runs between Good Friday or 1 April (whichever is the earlier) to 31 October each year. Sailings are weather dependent with the final decision resting with the Boatman; decisions on sailing are made each day by 9.00am and are dependent on both conditions and forecast. A strong northerly wind will prevent departure from Martin’s Haven and access to Skomer landing.

There are daily Skomer Island Landings and cruises on the Dale Princess. There is also a Skomer and Skokholm Safari.

The Lobster Pot Inn, Marloes

The Lobster Pot Inn has an excellent selection of real ales, locally caught fish, bar meals and restaurant - check the specials board, which changes on a daily basis. There is also a games room and garden area to keep the youngsters occupied.

"We ate here twice when we stayed in Marloes for 2 nights to visit Skomer island, as this was the only place open for dinner in the village. I was particularly impressed with their fresh dressed crab salad - it was delicious! The St Bride's mackerel was also lovely".

"The service was friendly and the food good value. We both had John Dory - which we had never tried before - and enjoyed it. Other fish dishes also looked appetising".

The Griffin Inn, Dale

The Griffin Inn is situated just around the bay from Marloes Sands and only a few miles from the village of Marloes and Skomer Island. They proudly hold the Pembrokeshire Produce Mark for using local ingredients wherever possible.

"A very pleasant friendly pub with a good choice of food. Well worth a visit".

"The welcome was warm, the food was "proper" food (not the bog standard/ ping cuisine fare you get in so many places) - very tasty and a lot of local produce - the ham was TREMENDOUS and plentiful , the land lady friendly, the view over the haven (its near the slipway) was great".

Lovely place with amazing staff made me the wife and our kids welcome. Food was really nice can recommend garlic mushrooms and the cesar salad. All in all a lovely place.
