What was great?
Very permissive site - you can pitch where you like, how you like. The campsite is organised along the course of the River Exe in 4 consecutive camping fields, each a further step from the road and civilisation. There's tonnes of space. The camping fields and very flat (and well drained it seemed, although it has been a dry spring and summer so far!) and are surrounded by the steep sides of the valley, all owned by Westermill Farm, so it feels at once sheltered but wild. The owners are very friendly and provide a wealth of info about the local area - this campsite is set at the heart of one of the UK's only Dark Sky Reserves; there are 4 way-marked extensive walks around the farm from the campsite, across the farm's 500 acres - ideal for walking. The river is great for kids - there are some pools deep enough for a dip (so bring wetsuits and cossies) and the water if full of baby trout - our son spent his time on his stomach with his mask on and face in the water watching the wildlife. There is a great shop on site open twice a day selling milk, local bread, eggs and meat from the farm as well as a range of the stuff you are likely to have forgotten. Head to the fourth field if you want a campfire - the owner of the site, Oliver, even provides wood for your fires, free of charge when we were there. We were in a 'van and so didn't really use the facilities ; they seemed functional and clean. We should also say that we camped with our two dogs. This is an ideal site for campers with dogs - there's enough space for your dog to mill about your pitch without needing to be pinned to the ground and without upsetting anyone else. There are also loads of walks directly from your pitch up onto the hills and fields, great for evening and morning walks. Come to this site if you are camping to unwind, for the beauty of the environment, for the space, the setting and for access to the wilds of Exmoor.

Even better if....
The fourth field of the site allows campfires...this attracted lots of considerate campers but also one very large group of incredibly noisy families who had travelled to the site together. Their kids ran up and down the full length of the camping field shrieking and screaming for most of the afternoon and well into the night. There were loads of other family groups there who were far quieter and seemed to understand that camping etiquette requires you to keep an eye on your kids and ensure that they aren't gate-crashing everyone else's pitch! If we'd foregone the campfire and camped in fields 1-3, we wouldn't have had this problem - these fields were really quiet.
