Welcome to Wimbleball Lake Campsite

The newly renovated facilities at this majestic Lake in Exmoor National Park offer first class facilities both on and off the water.
Wimbleball Lake has been nominated to be the first Dark Skies Discovery Site on Exmoor. Exmoor National Park has been designated an International Dark Sky Reserve, the first place in Europe to achieve this prestigious award and only the second in the world.
The Outdoor + Active Centre is open for tuition in various watersports activities including sailing, windsurfing, canoeing and rowing. Visitors can also launch their own craft or hire from the centre.
Wimbleball is also a premier trout fishery offering angling from the banks and boats. There are often tuition days for beginners and improvers, and further details are posted on our fishing pages. Permits are available on site and boats can be booked in advance.
The land surrounding the lake offers miles of footpaths including a 9-mile round Lake walk.
A Tramper, an electric all-terrain mobility scooter designed specifically to cover rough ground, mud and grass safely for visitors with limited mobility. The Tramper is available for hire at the Outdoor + Active Centre.
The cycle route takes you around the lake, following mostly bridleways and some quiet country lanes. The route passes through woodland and grassland, with tantalising glimpses of the lake.
The cafe, adjacent to the campsite offers an indoor retreat for light lunches, beverages and snacks whilst the play area is ideal for the younger ones to burn off some energy in the beautiful Exmoor countryside.
A campsite overlooks the water and welcomes holidaymakers and participants in watersports courses.
Cafe Opening Times: Open 7 days a week from 10.30am - 5.00pm
Daily car parking charges apply. Why not purchase an annual parking permit for only £30 to give you free parking at all South West Lakes Trust venues? Available from our head office on 01566 771930. By purchasing an annual parking permit you will automatically become a Friend of the Trust.

Unfortunately Wimbleball Lake is not served by public transport, however Exmoor National Park run a Moor Rover service during the summer which is a dial and ride service visit www.exmoor-nationalpark.gov.uk for more information.

Camping at Wimbleball Lake

Welcome to Wimbleball Lake campsite, an AA 3-Star graded site with panoramic views over the lake nestling amongst the Exmoor hills.
It has easy access to the cafe and children's play area and is only a short walk from the Outdoor + Active Centre; offering windsurfing, sailing, rowing and kayaking - you can learn, launch your own craft or hire. If you prefer to stay on land, there are beautiful walks and a cycle trail. Anglers are well catered for with boat and bank fishing facilities at this renowned stocked rainbow trout location. The lake can also cater for groups/ scout groups wishing to enjoy an activity based holiday.

Facilities:

Showers, wash up, disposal and recycling facilities, electric hook-ups and hard standing pitches. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead.

Dark Sky Discovery Site

Wimbleball Lake has been nominated as the first Dark Sky Discovery Site on Exmoor. Exmoor National Park has been designated an International Dark Sky Reserve, the first place in Europe to achieve this prestigious award and only the second in the world.
Dark Sky Discovery is an England-wide project being undertaken by the Dark Sky Discovery Partnership, led by the Royal Observatory Edinburgh Visitor Centre. The Visitor Centre is managed by Science and Technology Facilities Council's UK Astronomy Technology Centre (UK ATC).
The initiative is being part-funded by Natural England's Access to Nature Programme, which is part of the Big Lottery Fund's Changing Spaces Programme.
Wimbleball Lake is a fantastic location for stargazing within the Exmoor National Park International Dark Sky Reserve. Individual or group activities can take place with level hard surfaced areas for setting up your telescope that overlook the scenic lakeside with clear big sky views far from any light pollution.

Outdoor + Active Wimbleball

Wimbleball Lake, Exmoor; a vast expanse of inland sheltered water, perfect for most watersports, all season training, land and water-based events, schools and youth groups and all round family fun.

PLEASE NOTE - It is ESSENTIAL that visitors to Wimbleball contact the centre prior to travelling to check weather and availability of safety cover as times vary during term time. It is also essential that you contact the centre prior to travelling to check hire is still running as occasionally we have large group bookings.

There are BBQ and picnic facilities, children’s play areas, changing facilities and showers available to use afterwards.

Tailored packages to suit all tastes from £50 per person. Make it a day to remember with adrenalin filled water and land based activities to enjoy.

School/Youth and Charity groups

Wimbleball Lake Country Park is the perfect location for outdoor and environmental education for children and young people of all ages.

With the facility to run curriculum based activities focussing on all of the key stages and
to an advanced level, Wimbleball Outdoor + Active Centre has become a centre of
excellence for the schools of Somerset and Devon.

The centre provides opportunities for people to learn a new sport, enhance their skills,
gain confidence and participate in environmental education in a safe inland environment.

We also offer hire and launch, tasters and multi activity days for adults and children, as well as national qualifications in sailing, kayaking, windsurfing.

What to bring?
You will require:
a towel,
swimming costume,
trainers or wetsuit boots (suitable to get wet in),
sunhat or woolly hat,
warm jacket,
suncream,
a drink and a packed lunch (if appropriate).
Wetsuits and buoyancy aids are included in tuition prices or you may wish to bring your own.

Trout Fishing

This nationally renowned lake is regularly stocked with Rainbows up to 8lb to ensure excellent sport.
Fly fishing only.
There is a good mayfly hatch in late June/early July, whilst buzzer fishing gives good sport throughout the season.
Fibreglass fishing boats are available (six with 4-stroke petrol outboards). Advanced booking is essential to guarantee availability.
Flyaking, come and fish from a Kayak bring your own or hire ours.
The wheelyboat for disabled anglers should be booked 48 hours in advance via the Wimbleball Activities Centre.
A 'Catch and release' option is available (barbless hooks must be used).
Wimbleball Fly Fishers organises competitions and social events based at the fishery throughout the year.
The South West Fishing For Life project for women recovering from breast cancer is also based at Wimbleball.

Walking and Cycling

There are many miles of paths following the shorelines of lakes, meandering through woodland and onto open moorland. There’s also a wealth of wildlife to watch and discover so whether you’re looking for a leisurely stroll, an active cycle ride or a more challenging walk whatever your ability there is something for everyone at the lakes.
At times, due to weather conditions or maintenance, it is necessary to temporarily close sections of these paths. Information on any closures can be found in the table below.
New disabled Tramper at Wimbleball
Generously supplied by the Countryside Mobility Scheme, the tramper offers the opportunity for people of all abilities to enjoy paths both to the dam and to Bessom Bridge at a very low cost.

Wimbleball Lake also offers an introductory orienteering course suitable for children and families or for those looking for a first taste of orienteering. There are several routes laid out around the course.
Shorter Courses
There are two routes to choose from: the Standard Course, usually taking 20 - 45 minutes, or the Quick Course, taking approximately 15 minutes. Collect the letters around these routes to spell the names of species from amongst the flora and fauna of Wimbleball Lake.
Longer Course
The Punch Course, usually taking 1 hour or more. Punch your card at each post as you find your way around the course.
Details and cards are available from the cafe at the Lake.

NEW Cycle paths at Wimbleball
The three trails, developed with the 1 South West Project, are ideal for cyclists of all abilities. The two woodland ‘kids' trails', ‘Mr Twisty' and ‘Mr Twizzle' wind their way through the trees providing a fun and safe environment where parents can sit back and relax whilst their children enjoy cycling around the track. The scenic ‘Wimbleball Wheeler' is a 1.7km green grade trail which runs adjacent to the lake finishing at the dam.

Once inside our café you can enjoy the views and relax in a warm and friendly environment.
Serving a delicious range of light lunches, meals, desserts, homemade cakes, gluten-free alternatives, hot and cold drinks and Styles Farm ice cream.
Popular with walkers, families and those just enjoying the view, Wimbleball café serves locally sourced produce and regularly has 'specials' on the menu for variety.

Groups, including coach parties, are most welcome. Please call for further information and to book in advance. Coaches should avoid the route via Brompton Regis and access the site via Raleigh's Cross to the north.

In addition to the café you will also find a well-stocked gift shop offering a variety of gifts to suit every taste in seasonal crafts and souvenirs.

Directions

Wimbleball Lake can be found by following the brown signs off the A396 from Tiverton; from Dunster take the A396 to Dulverton to pick up the signs or from Taunton take the A39 to Wheddon Cross and then the B3190 towards Bampton, the lake is signposted from this road.

Please note that access for caravans and to extent motor homes is difficult on some of the lanes around Wimbleball.
Recommended route for caravans and extent motor homes:
Coming from Tiverton with a caravan please follow the signs to Wimbleball via Exmoor at the Exeter Inn roundabout taking through Bampton.
Coming from Dunster, the access signed at Dulverton through Brompton Regis is impassable due to narrow lanes and very steep and tight corners. From Dunster, caravans should continue past Dulverton to the roundabout at the Exeter Inn where they turn left following Wimbleball via Exmoor.
Coming from the north on M5, caravans should leave at Taunton follow the B358 to Watchet and Minhead. At Bishop's Lydeard turn left and follow the B3224 through past Raleigh's Cross.
