Attractions
The World famous Royal County Down Golf Links.
The world renowned Royal County Down Golf course is only 5 minutes walk from Windsor Holiday Park, making us an ideal base for you to enjoy a golfing break. Many other good quality courses are available locally. The Province recently beat off stiff competition from the top golfing locations around the world - including the US, Portugal, Spain, the Republic of Ireland and Scotland to receive the IAGTO 'Established Golf Destination of the Year' award.
Royal County Down is located in one of the world’s most naturally beautiful links settings in the Murlough Nature Reserve. Against the magnificent backdrop of the Mountains of Mourne, the links stretches along the shores of Dundrum Bay, zigzagging back and forth to provide a different vista from virtually every hole.
Walking.
The Mourne area of outstanding natural beauty is the ideal walking break destination. Whether you are a keen hill walker or just enjoy a gentle stroll, there are walks for every ability. There is a diverse landscape, which offers walks to savour mountains, drumlins, forests, lakes, rivers and beautiful sandy beaches.
Great places to walk -
Murlough nature reserve ( The 12 arches board-walk)
Tollymore forest park
Castlewellan forest park
Donard park (Glen river trail)
Newcastle promenade and beach
Keel point (Dundrum)
All the above are gentle walks . Of course if you wish for something a little more up beat you can take on the Mourne mountains.
Rock Climbing
The Mourne mountains offer a variety of rock climbing unparalleled in Ireland, with over 20 crags spread throughout the range. The high granite tors of Slieve Binnian, Slieve Bearnagh and Hen Mountain give excellent short routes on rounded weathered granite. The easy-angled slabs of Slieve Bearnagh and Slieve Lamagan offer long but generally easy expeditions and the steeper faces of Slieve Beg, Spellack, Cove Mountain and Pigeon give quality routes mostly from 'Severe' upwards. The 'fun crags' of Hares Castle, Annalong Buttress and Wee Binnian give short test pieces of all grades, but with a less serious atmosphere and a south-facing aspect. Couple this variety with over five hundred quality routes and there is the opportunity for endless climbing trips. New routes are continually being put up and many fine lines remain.
Mountain Biking
The Mournes is an ideal cycling destination as it has terrain to suit all types of cyclists, from challenging mountain climbs to flat and gently rolling hills of the lowland coastal planes. There are seven local sign posted Cycle Trails for you to follow each with varying degrees of difficulty and length. Mountain bikers have their own dedicated off-road trail at Moneyscalp in the Mournes. Bikes can be hired locally.
Horse Riding
Enjoy gentle treks through forest glens, a pleasant canter by the waters edge of the Irish Sea or an exhilarating gallop along the sands. All levels of riders are catered for, whether it's your first time or you're an experienced rider, there are all degrees of trekking available with horses and ponies to suit everyone. Mourne Coastal Tours
“Now you can experience the Beauty of the Mourne Mountains from the sea courtesy of an exhilarating ride on our high speed Rib. Our trips leave daily (weather depending from the local ports of Newcastle, Warrenpoint, Kilkeel and Annalong). During our high speed cruise it is possible to see Porpoises, Basking Sharks, seals and numerous sea Birds. Our trips vary in duration from short 15 minute trips to longer 1hr cruises. The boat is also available for charter and we can tailor a trip for you and your guests. Our craft is an 8.5m Eco V-type rib powered with two 150hp outboard engines. It is MCA approved and carries all safety equipment and navigational aids. We also supply waterproof jackets but we would suggest that passengers ensure that they dress in warm clothing even in the summer. We are however dependant on the weather and the boat will only go out when conditions are safe. Andrew Cowden is our Skipper. He is a marine engineer and a part-time Lifeboat man. He is also extremely knowledgeable about the wildlife you will encounter on your trip. ”
