when we first started 'vanning , we towed using a bulldog bar type stabiliser never had a problem with snaking while using it but when I bought our current 'van it was fitted with an elderly westfalia bear trap of a hitch and to be fair never had any problems with that either but for ease of use I decided to change it for an alko hitch ,albeit a pre-loved one .

since fitting this hitch I have now experienced snaking on 2 occasion's neither time was I travelling at excessive speed, 55mph max', nor was either the car or van heavily loaded

I was wondering if the pads on our alko hitch would benefit from being changed as I have no idea how many miles the original owner put on the unit, although I believe they should be good for 30,000 miles

has anyone here changed the friction pads in their hitch ,if so ,how involved a job is it ?

The job itself is quite easy to tackle. On most Alko stabilisers there is an indicator for when the pads require changing so may be worth checking that. Maybe even check the towball diameter too for excessive wear.

hi Andy, since posting I have done a bit more research on how to check the friction pads, so will be doing that little job next time I pop over to the storage yard to check the 'van.
bit of plejurism ( I know what it means just can't spell it,lol) here
Hook van to car (unless you have spare tow ball) and click the black handle down to lock it on to tow ball
If you look on the silver part of the AlKo stabiliser handle you will see an arrow (one each side) on the bulbous part, if you then look on the red soft dock you will see two flat areas one each side about 1cm long.
