Hi will be taking my 3 yr old and 1 yr old sons camping this Easter. Do you have any useful tips? Has anyone bought adult sleeping bags and just let their kids grow into them? Any useful tips will be much appreciated ! Thanks

Make you take lots of layers for bedtime especially if you don't have EHU and dress them for bed before dusk with top clothes over the top as it keeps them warmer before the temperature drops. Take one hot water bottle for each person and put in their beds about 30 mins before bed. knowing how cold it can be at easter these things will help.
I would also do the normal bedtime routine so if your kids have milk, story etc, try to keep the same routine as much as poss.

Def agree on the hot water bottle..... a bit of a hassle heating the water up but an absolute luxury and would definitely help keep the kids warm Posted by George Tucker on 19 Mar 2013

Camping with kids is great fun! My wife and I took our son camping from 6 months onwards. We always took a play pen or travel cot, which easily fitted into our family tent and folded up for packing when travelling. It was very useful as our son slept in their at night and we could put him in there with a few toys whenever we couldn't be sure we could keep an eye on him. As for a sleeping bag there is no way he would have stayed in an adult sleeping bag. We used to put him in a 18-36mth baby sleeping bags. If it was cold we just put him in 2 of these sleeping bags and that worked perfectly. Hope that helps

Would definitely go for the kids size sleeping bags with their favourite characters on them and would also suggest the kids size inflatible beds with small sides for the bigger one and the travel cot for the smaller one.

All the replies are really good and I especially like the idea of getting them in the bed attire early with normal clothes on top.

Just hope for decent weather and they will love it.

I agree..seems very sensible to put them in bed clothes and them normal clothes on top. Then no naked bodies when its really cold later! Posted by Jenny Brooke on 19 Mar 2013

Given how early Easter is this year, it is likely to be cold. So layers and more layers is vital. A travel cot for the 1 year old is probably the best bet. When our daughter was a baby we had a sheepskin rug from IKEA to go on top of the mattress for insulation with a sheet over that. Then dressed her in a vest, babygro, all-in-one fleece suit with feet (Trespass do a good one with a hood which is great and feet and hands which fold back so they can have their feet/hands covered or not). Alternatively, Primark and Mothercare do them too. We then covered her with plenty of blankets as the temperature required.

Now she is a toddler, our daughter has an all in one with pyjamas and a vest underneath and a hat if it is particularly cold. She usually ends up in bed with us (we have a 6 foot wide airbed) under our duvet. However, we bring a single airbed and duvet for her - you can get beds with raised sides which are good for toddlers. If you use airbeds, always remember to have a layer of insulation under the airbed or under you, as the air in the bed provides no insulation from the cold ground. We usually put a blanket under the sheet covering the airbed, but some people use those thin aluminium blankets under the airbed itself. Whatever works for you.

Bring a monitor if you can find one which takes batteries in both units (the BT150 used to but has been discontinued though they are still available on Ebay). This way, you can sit round the campfire or outside the tent in the evenings and still hear the children if they wake. Gives you a bit of freedom so you don't have to stay in the tent with them.

You will probably find they take a while to settle the first night, but the fresh air knocks them for six after that.

Take loads of changes of clothes and plenty of waterproofs and that should cover you for all weathers.

Hope it goes brilliantly. Camping with kids is fab and they have a ball.

Thank you so much for taking time for all ideas. Absolutely great. I especially like the blow up mattress with the built in sides....didn't know these exist! iI already have the all-in-ones! Also hadn't thought about a battery monitor. Will definitely feel more secure knowing I would hear them straight away if they wake, but also lovely to sit outside and have a relax!! My mum always used to buy my stuff bigger than I needed thinking it was a more cost effective option, trouble is, by the time I had grown into them, they were worn out anyway.

Your three year old will enjoy a kids bag much better than an adults bag, which will help at bedtime, especially if it has a cowboy or princess (or whatever they are into) on it.

My wife had the great idea of putting a tent up in our dining room the week before we went camping. We put our toddler daughter down for her day time naps just to get her used to sleeping in there. Went we went camping for the first time she slept pretty well which we weren't expecting as she was a really fussy sleeper generally. Think the practise tent in the dining room helped.

Introducing an infant baby to camping is alot easier than introducing a toddler. If you love camping take them when they are babies so that they are used to it by the time they are a toddler as its a whole different world for them!!

That sounds great that you are camping with your 3 years daughter and 1 year son. I would recommend you to dress your kids in layers and take better care of their outfit because weather could be extreme nowadays. Also, take your kids' favourite food packs with you, especially the dry fruit for toddler and cereal for infant to avoid food-related issues.

To enhance comfort level while sleep, you should also carry sleeping nests for your infant from this KallySleep store https://www.kallysleep.com/shop/accessories/kally-baby-nest/ and keep safe and cosy sleep bag for the toddler as well. Moreover, don't forget to carry medical kit, hand sanitizer and disinfected kit with you. Have a pleasant journey :)

For older kids, the best thing that we do is help them to make friends with other kids as soon as they get to the site. Then they have a great time for the rest of their stay. Once they 'get shy' it can take them a lot longer to say hello and 'take the leap'!
