Hi Maria,

I am jealous!

I haven't got much experience of touring around Scotland but I have been up the West coast around Oban and over on the ferry to Mull. Absolutely stunning island - really varied terrain and a very friendly community. Loved it. Ferry easy to book - Caledonian Macbrayne, or something like that! I think it cost about £170 for us to cross and get back in high season which seemed steep, but definitely worth it. There are a few good campsites on the island and PLENTY of places to pull over and pitch up undisturbed if you won't mind a bit 'wild' touring!

Thanks Adrian for info.
Don't mind wild camping at all, save a little bit money.

Hi Maria, in 2013. We toured Scotland, in August, over a 3 week period. Before setting off we worked out the distance between camp sites, then pre-booked the sites in advance. Staying for 2 or 3 nights at each location. All the sites we booked were either Caravan or Caravan & Camping Club Sites.
We set off from Pateley Bridge in Yorkshire with our first stop at Berwick Upon Tweed, then onwards and upwards to Loch Lomond, Glen Coe, Avimore, then on the return trip, Dunkeld, Seahouses, and then back to Yorkshire.
We had a brilliant time and all the camp sites were great, easy to find with easy access.

Hope you have a great time.

Regards
Ray

Hi Ray
Thanks for the information, glad you had a good time, 2 weeks for us at the most as we still have to work not retired yet.was thinking of august..but maybe the end of may .looking at first stop over Glastonbury, still looking at where else we could go heading north Scotland.
What sites would you recommend.

Hi Maria, because of the distance from Glastonbury to Scotland you would need at least one break on the way north (400+ miles). There are some lovely sites around the Northwich area, not too far off the M6, and about half way to Scotland.
I would recommend a stop for a couple of nights at, http://www.campingintheforest.co.uk/scotland/cashel-campsite . On the banks of Loch Lomond. Then travel to http://www.campingandcaravanningclub.co.uk/campsites/uk/argyll/ballachulish/glencoe.
Regards Ray

Hi Maria,

Reading this thread with interest as I fancy a trip (camping, though, not touring!) North of the border. I thought, though, that the midges would be worse in high summer? Maybe May would be better midge-wise? Althogh it mightn't be as bad if you aren't in a tent!
Comment
I went in august camping on the motorbike and after the first night decided to use hostels and bunkhouses instead, the first morning trying to put the tent away was horrible, there were that many midges it felt like it was raining, lol.
Gave the tent away and stayed as mentioned in bunkhouses and hostels and they were great. Scotland seems very well geared up for it and even have a brochure thingy with them all in.
My favourite place though was Kinlochleven near fort william

Hi Maria, midges cab be a problem in Scotland, but I must admit on our tour we didn't have any problems on this occasion. But I wouldn't let it deter you from visiting this lovely country. You can buy mosquito repellent.
Regards
Ray
