Question: Camping & Camping Club VS Caravan Club

Thinking of joining either the Camping & Camping Club or Caravan Club and have looked at both their websites but would like to hear peoples opinions as to which is the best to be a member of.

Caravan Club doesn't seem to have enough parks to facilitate all of it's members by quite a large amount. Has anybody experienced a problem with this? Any problems finding pitches?

I have a Swift Challenger 530 single axle.

We are members of both.
I often find that the CC sites are fully booked, as at the beginning of the year some people book lots of pitches for throughout the year. The popular sites have every weekend fully booked. The C&CC asks for a deposit, so people are less inclined to pre-book until certain that they can make it.
As Peter says, the CC does however have discounts, eg the M6 toll road.
They both have a good selection of sites and staying on them for a few nights recoups the membership cost.

Lynn,
Thanks for being so honest about CC. I expected that may be the case but it is nice to be told by someone with experience!

hi Ben,
we're members of both clubs and have been for about 4 years now, personally we have had no problems at all with booking onto CC sites, but we do tend to book earlier rather than later.
like this year for instance we knew where we wanted to go so as soon as the CC's on-line booking option opened we booked straight away and got onto to our first choice sites with no problem

also we tend to go for slightly larger sites as opposed to the CC's small 5 pitch sites( some of these do seem to be booked up for years in advance ) due to us normally travelling with friends

we have remained members of both clubs simply for the number of sites available to choose from but next year i think we will be cancelling one or the other purely on financial grounds

as for C&CC sites one possible small niggle is that some of their sites mix tent pitches in with caravan pitches , which dosen't really bother us personally but some folk do seem to have a problem with it

we have also opted for the CC's 'mayday' breakdown/ recovery service ( run in conjunction with the RAC) as opposed to the the recovery option offered by the C&CC ( green flag)again purely for monetery reasons

plus CC membership also gets you discounts on purchases at places like Towsure ( although T's & C's do apply i.e. a minimum spend is required to qualify for the discount)

so for us at least the CC has proved to be the more useful option upto now at least
hope this helps your decision process a little am sure though others will have different opinions for you to digest

Peter, thanks for such a comprehensive answer. Now far clearer, I think I am swaying towards C & CC at the moment. May give that a go for a year and see how it goes.
Thanks again.

Caravan Club Mayday is operated by Green Flag and Camping and Caravan Club recovery is operated by RAC. I have Green Flag they seem to be able to cope better with larger motorhomes. Posted by Vic Nelson on 31 May 2013

I'm a member of CC and was thinking of switching to CC&C this year but may join both now instead. We found booking on CC easy enough, we got out first choices each time but found the sites a bit geared for older persons ( not much for kids to do) and populated by 'tutters'. We don't mind kids on bikes or just roaming around so will be looking for more sites with children on for ours to chum up with.

We too are members of both clubs, and have been for several years. Consequently, we are able to consider a wider range of sites with confidence that we will find good standards at any site we choose. I see no need to repeat what has already been said but I would like to add a couple of comments which may be of interest.

Sometimes we feel CC sites lack imagination in their layout and despair at looking down lines of caravans each looking straight across at the "neighbours" opposite. This isn't the situation at all CC sites though.

We quite like being mixed in with tenters at C&CC sites but we find their hardstandings to be a lot narrower than CC pitches where you can park the car next to your van and have an awning up at the other side of the 'van. On the C&CC hardstandings we have used, if the erect an awning you have to park your car across the front of the 'van.

The C&CC offer a discount to the over 55's which we are more than happy to take advantage of!

So there are pluses and minuses but we are quite content to remain members of both clubs if only for the large range of different sites available to book.

I agree with you entirely. We have been members of both clubs for many years and find them both useful.Maybe a little more regimental with the CC.However you pays your money and takes your choice. Posted by Martin CharlesJeggo on 11 Apr 2013

We used to be members of both clubs, and it is small expense if you use your van all year round for a large amount of touring as it gives you plenty of choices of sites which are to a good standard all over the country.

Hi we have been a member of the Caravan Club now for two and a half years. We wished we had joined the caravan and camping club for the following reasons.
The caravan club seem to not have enough pitches for all the members, they have several sites that we have been on to look like car parks.

When you look at the caravan and Camping sites there seems to be a lot more and in better locations. Don't get me wrong I am not against the caravan club as I'm still a member but if I can get the van insurance as cheap with the caravan and camping club I may change this year.

Darn! I've just joined the Caravan Club, I knew I should have joined the Caravan & Camping Club. I was in it for years and it was great. Posted by Raymond Turner on 10 Apr 2013
Raymond, hey at least you will able to see the difference and then make a better choice for next year. Enjoy the mobile villa and great outdoors. Posted by Darren England on 10 Apr 2013
