The problems with towing a car on a trailer are that you will use more fuel than if you tow it on an a-frame, the weight of the trailer will add around another 500kg onto your train weight and also you will have trouble getting on some sites as you are effectively taking up 3 x spaces when the car is off the trailer. Other than that I believe that a car is safer on a trailer than on an a-frame.
The problems with an A-frame is that you have to be able to operate the cars brakes. The A-frames as used by the AA etc without brakes are only legal for towing a vehicle from where it breaks down to a place of repair. Also nearly all automatic cars are not suitable for towing on an A-frame
We normally tow a motorbike or canoe or a Reliant Robin on purpose built (by me) trailers. My wife Margaret only drives automatics and we did look at buying a Skoda Citigo as it has an electro mechanical clutch and as far as I am aware a standard manual gearbox without the gear stick and according to the dealers it can be towed but if I was still going to buy one I would read the handbook.
