Has anybody ever found a really good method for putting away your electric hook-up cable after use so that it doesn't end up in a knotted mess?

I have tried various methods over the years but not found any particularly good.

If you know anyone or anywhere that does mig or tig welding then scrounge an empty welding wire reel of them. They are normally made of strong plastic and come in a suitable size. Another method that works is a piece of plywood about 18 inches x 8 inches (450 x 200 mm) cut a notch out of each end and jigsaw a handhold on one side and simply hold in one hand and wind the cable on with the other hand. My long cable come complete on an orange coloured plastic reel, it fits in a nylon bag it looks very neat but is not as convenient as the previous 2 methods, especially if like us you are always on the move and winding the cable up every couple of days.

hi Phil
like Andy I have a plastic reel jobbie, cost me £9.99 can't recall the name of the outlet but it's on a little industrial / retail park just outside Brid', the reel ,as they say, ' do's what it says on the tin', it's neat, tidy, easy to use and stows away nicely in our front locker

Thanks for the replies.

Have tried both the above with varying degrees of success.

What I would ideally love is either an automatic rewind facility like you get on some hoovers or a curly lead like some hose pipes that would pull out and just recoil when unplugged - I guess I will just have to dream on!!

Hello Phil ok I know what you want and they are available, however I don't know what amperage, or what length cables are available. I am semi-retired now but still work four days a month to help support my expensive hobbies. Tomorrow I am working at Cambridge Airport and they have them there. I shall try and remember to take a note of the manufacturer's name and pass it on to you. Regards Alan Posted by alan Myland on 12 May 2013
Hello Phil
The cable reels at Cambridge Airport were supplied by RS Components. If you look them up on the Internet you will hopefully be able to get what you want. Regards Alan

Hi Phil.
I think I found the answer? See my first every post. 'Is your mains cable too long?' I cut mine and now have two smaller ones that are no problem to put away.
Cheers Wil

I like this ideas Phil. Do you have a short cable and a long cable? The amount of times you have to unwind 25m of cable when 10 m would have done the job! Posted by Mike Hawker on 24 Aug 2013
Hi I have one ten and one at fifteen metres making twenty five when joined togrther.
Hope it works for you?

Never had the "Knotted" problem. I wind the cable by holding one end firmly in my right hand, stretching out the left hand holding the 'loose' end so you get a 2 metre length, move the left hand to the right hand, and repeat the above. The result, a coil of 2 metre loops.
Unwind is the reverse.
No need for 'fancy' cable drums.

That is the method I have used mostly for the last 20 years or so but have found over time that cable does start to twist. Maybe due to the amount of times we hook-up/un-hook which probably averages around 20 times a year. Posted by Phil Heller on 18 May 2013
