Propane should work well below freezing. Have been caught out in the past, when butane wouldn't convert, so couldn't have the cooked breakfast!

Hi Jeff,
Micheals link is a good one and very informative, personally I opted for propane ( after taking advice from several more experienced camping friends at the time ) mainly due to the fact that we used to camp all year round, often going in Dec', Jan', & Feb' time and found that ( as I had been advised) propane ( red bottle) worked better at colder tempratures and also the regulator is more or less standard irrespective of supplier, not always the case with butane ( blue bottle) apparently.

even though we don't take the 'van out much after Oct' these days I have stuck with propane out of habit more than anything else.
apart from the temperature & regulator aspects, I don't
think there's that much in it performance wise , although personally I do think propane seems to burn a bit hotter than butane but that is only a personal opinion based solely on my own experience ( our 1st caravan was running butane when we got it , we ran that until the bottle was empty , at which time I changed to propane .

hope this help's

Hi Jeff,

Would partly depend on where you caravan and if you caravan during the colder months.

We plumped for propane, with living in Scotland, and have stuck with it for 20 years or so with no problems despite sometimes waking up to heavy snow/frost.

Used to use a small butane cooker for fishing and it was next door to useless once temps got anywhere below about 40F.

Yes I agree with using Propane as it is all year round. There is another advantage in that you can get cylinders that can be filled with LPG at petrol stations at less than half price.

Propane everytime for me , as I have my van on a year round site in Derbyshire (not the most sheltered spot in the country) and use my gas year round , also you can buy a refill adaptor for the bottles and refill with LPG at local garage for less than half price

Where can you get the connection to fill up at a garage and also how do you know that the bottle is full Posted by Len GILHAM on 27 Jun 2013
I got mine off Ebay , 2 lts of lpg = 1Kg, so a 13 Kg bottle holds 26 Ltrs , I'll have a look for them on Ebay and post you a link Len Posted by Chris Dearden on 28 Jun 2013
