On arriving late at our caravan for a quiet weekend in the Dales I was a bit surprised to find the 12v battery flat as a pancake. Due to the lateness of the hour and the fact we had mains electric we bunkered down for the the night, thinking the battery would re-charge overnight.

Alas not a flicker on the meter the following morning, it was still as dead the the proverbial Dodo.
In the the end I had to put it on the charger for 6 hours which finally pushed 11v back into the battery (which was new a few months ago). Anyway we finally got all the pumps, and other 12v stuff working again but am a bit a bit apprehensive about whether or not we'll find it dead next time we go up to the van.
The van is a Bailey Senator Series 5, and I'm pretty positive I turned everything off before leaving.
Anyone any ideas on what could drain the battery?
Regards
Ray, fully re-charged after a lovely weekend caravanning.

you might have a couple of the cells that are dead, and they always say don,t let the battery drain right down mate i tend to trickle charge mine once a month, thing is how long do you leave it between trips to your van

Hi Robert, I'd only left it for a week, so unless I inadvertently left something on, it could be the battery. I'll find out next weekend! And I definitely switched everything off this time.
I'll keep you posted
Thanks for replying

I think Robert may be correct and that it's a battery fault. On returning to the van over the weekend the battery went dead after about ten minutes. Luckily I took a replacement with me plus a battery charger. Replacement battery worked fine and was still showing 13v when we left. Check again next weekend but I'm pretty positive that new new battery I bought is a duff one.
Moral of this story is always have a spare battery and a charger on hand.

Also check that your charger is not over charging causing damage to your battery. Posted by stuart lyon on 24 Nov 2013
