We are looking to travel to either Germany or France for a couple of weeks holiday in the summer. Which would be the best for us who have never been out of the country with our van and why?

Maybe I should just add to my rather hurried answer late last night!

You don't say how you will be visiting the continent, motorhome or trailer caravan?

If you're in a motorhome then the stelplatz in Germany and the aires de service in France offer a great place for the camper on the move to spend a night or two. They are often free with a small charge for services in some, particularly electric hook-up and they are often in really nice locations, not stuck out on the industrial estate or some less desirable part of town as I could imagine them being in Britain if we were to have any! There are books showing all the stelplatz and aires and these can be easily purchased on the internet.

France also has a rather more relaxed attitude to motorhomes than the UK and as long as you're not being a nuisance to anyone, wild camping is widely accepted. You would of course need to be pretty well self-contained to do this.

As well as the free alternatives I've mentioned, you would do well to look into staying at vineyards. We stayed at one in the Black Forest. It was a pleasant place in a village and in exchange for eating in their extremely reasonable and very tasty restaurant we stayed for free, even including electric hook-up.

Another possibility in France is the 'Camping Municipal', usually a little more basic than commercially run sites but still good and with all that you need to stay.We also used a similar site outside of Freiburg, Germany. It was very reasonably priced and within easy walking distance of a good tram service into the town.

Add to that the fact that, at present, diesel prices are slightly more favorable on the continent, due in part to the exchange rate, but do fill up at the supermarket gas stations, and you have the makings of a really good trip at reasonable cost. I would second what has been said about the friendly welcome there is to be had in both countries and if you speak even a little of the languages it will be much appreciated.

Don't forget you will need a emission sticker for you vehicle in Germany.
Take a look at http://www.lowemissionzones.eu/ it will tell you which countries you need to apply for a sticker and how.

Unfortunately you cannot use French aires or German STELLPLATZ with a caravan, they are motorhomes only.
Therefore I recommend using municipal campsites which are usually cheaper than private run ones.
France and Germany are both fabulous in there own right and you can enjoy both.

I am not saying France isn't a good option but my vote is for Germany. Last year, I travelled there with my husband. Actually, we didn't go there in our own motorhome but hired a good one from here https://www.rvrentacampervan.com/motorhome-hire/germany/ with all required installations. Don't forget to visit Neuschwanstein Castle, Knaus Campingpark and the Black Forest.

Have a nice journey.

Well thats a hard one as i have been to both and loved them both, but if i had to choose, Hmmm got to be Germany i love the Country and i found the people ok there the wine is very good to what we did was cross at Dover to Calis and what we did is drove down the border so we where in France for a fair while and then crossed the border into Germany, so you get the best of both worlds, but each to they own here everybody has thier own opion on things, you will have to decied for yourselves on this one i can only say what i have good memories of don,t get me wrong France is nice but me i prefere Germany you will have to decice for yourselves but mainly have a great time :)

Thanks, which was the best area you visited? Posted by Darren England on 18 Oct 2013
Robert is quite right, both are great and the choice is yours. What I would say is, don't underestimate the stelplatz in Germany or Aires de service in France. We use them almost all the time. This year we were in the Black Forest and loved it. Posted by Les Derbyshire on 19 Oct 2013

Hi Darren,
Both are great places but again i would opt for Germany. The people there are so hospitable and welcoming. This coupled with the fantastic scenery, lakes, food etc would make it my destination of choice.
I'm a particular fan of Bavaria
