I have placed a new battery in the caravan and switched off all electrical items, master switch and even so the battery drains. If I take it off over winter it stays fully charged. What could be causing this and how can I check?

Thanks Raymond for this but if we turn off at the master switch should we not be able to leave the fridge door open so it does not go mouldy?
Comment
Hi Darren, I also thought everything was, off once the master switch was switched off. It wasn't until we turned the fridge to the off setting *0", the problem went away.
There is some natural discharge over he winter period and it is recommended you re-charge the battery before the season starts. I actually bought a replacement battery because of the some problem you're experiencing.
Regards
Ray

Do you have an alarm system, which is normally not part of the master switch? If so it is the answer. If not then take off the positive terminal clamp and put an ammeter between the terminal and clamp terminal. It will show any draw of power.

I had the same problem and it was caused by the fridge, make sure you turn the fridge off completely. If the door is left open slightly to allow air circulation the battery will drain.
Also ensure the power to the aerial is switched off.

Best of luck

any battery car or leisure will slowly dis-charge naturally over time ,irrespective of whether or not it's connected to any appliances or at least that's my understanding.

personally ,if our caravan isn't going to be used for a while, over winter for example, I always dis-connect the battery at the terminals in the battery box and to reduce the rate of dis-charge I have the battery hooked up to a small solar powered trickle charger, which sits in a prominent position in the window to maximise the amount of day light it gets, upto now this system has worked well for us over the ;last couple of years

as for possible causes Darren, I'm at a loss for suggestions really as ,like you, with the master switch off, I would have expected the 12v circuit to be completely in-active
un-less theres a fault with the switch which is stopping it from shutting off the circuit properly.

Peter, sometimes when the battery does not fully discharge as it does not always happen I see a small discharge in the display. I use the van and charge it up but a couple days later it may have discharged. Again this seems to be an intermittent thing. Spooky Posted by Darren England on 07 Feb 2014
