Thinking about buying a new caravan and there are lots of technical terms I don't really understand. What is the nose weight and how do you work it out? Also how do I know what appliances I can use on a mains hook-up? thanks

Nose weight is the weight that you are legally allowed to put on your towbar. Call any caravan dealer and tell them the make, model, year, engine size etc of your vehicle and they will tell you what nose weight you can take. Usually somewhere between 50-125 kilos.

Would add that your cars hand book should be able to give you this detail along with the weight you can tow.

I have found dealers, especially car dealers, are very poor on both providing and understanding what these technical terms are all about.

The Caravan Club have an excellent section explaining all things technical.

Hi Julie , you cannot calculate nose weight you have to measure it , with a nose weight scale , varying types available , I use a TLC electronic type just pop it on you tow ball and attach the van and hey presto it gives you nose weight , you can then adjust it to the specified weight for you vehicle by moving or removing items in the van .
Most domestic appliances will work on a 16A hook up , kettle, toaster, tv ,microwave etc, just try not to use them all at once and you'll be ok
