Question: Pump to drain water from pipes over winter?

A little help required from a very newbie motorhome owner...I have heard that you can get a pump to help drain water from pipes, taps and faucets during the winter months to prevent freezing and breakage...

Has anyone got any experience of these? Are they necessary or is there another way of blowing remaining water out of the 'van after draining? Do you know where I can get one. I have found lots of links to American websites... looking for a UK one!

Thanks.

Hi Bekah
Pipe bursts are caused when the water expands and the pipe gives way.
As long as you have drained the van and left the taps in an open position, the pipes should be virtually empty and therefore should be no risk of pipe bursts.

I agree, Andy. No real need to buy a pump, unless you want to... as long as the water CAN escape, there shouldn't be too many problems. We've had some hard spells of frost this year with no adverse effects. Posted by Rob Ackroyd on 27 Feb 2015

Hi Andy,

Thank you - this is very reassuring! So, in your opinion, no need for another expensive bit of kit? (No argument from me on that front!)

Hi Rebekah
I don't think so. Just remember to leave the taps open, and if they're mixer taps leave them open in the middle position.

Hi there.

We use a device called Floe this blows the last of the water out of the pipes, It's amazing how much water is left and could freeze an burst your pipes.

We would not leave our van without doing this. We paid £45 for our device but the price can alter a little depending on which one suits your outfit. You can find them on line.

Hope this helps

Dee
