Question: Caravan Servicing Charges

I am having trouble getting my head around the charges made by caravan dealers for their servicing. When a car has an annual service there are plenty of things to do and to for example replace oils and filters etc., but a caravans service should normally be a simple, quick and easy job to do so how do they come to their charges?

Most dealers have a fixed price for servicing, Some are set by the manufacturer.
A service shouldn't be quick, our last one took a total of 3 days.
Your gas system and appliances have to be checked as well as the electrical system.
Brakes and running gear, tyres, damp check, there are loads of checks to be done. Sooner it done properly rather than they miss stuff...

Above answer almost correct in what is done (chassis, running gear, gas, electrics, water system, brakes, damp test, ventilation, smoke detectors and bodywork).
My caravan is serviced by an authorised Service Engineer who is mobile - he does the service on my drive. It takes about 4 hours to complete. He has a check list with 7 sub headings and a total of 64 checks - an i can, and do, supervise that he does it!

It takes dealers longer as they like to have the van the day before, so they can do it "as and when".
My local dealer has completed my service in a day, dropping the van off at 9.00am and collecting it at 4.30pm - I don't live far from them, but they are twice the price - hence the mobile chap!

I am a mobile caravan engineer. A full single axle service takes me a minimum of 4 hours, the damp test alone takes about an hour to complete. There many sections to complete gas ,230v, 12v checks, chassis etc. Its a lot to do. Posted by Keith Mahoney on 17 Mar 2013
