?Lovely photo on a pinboard of a cat in a campervan, how does anyone manage going away on holiday with Cats? I am thinking about taking my 2 cats away sometimes but not sure how they would cope, do you keep them indoors, let them out and if so do they come back? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

My wife and I have always had cats. Our last two have spent many nights away with the caravan.

Our first cat was allowed to roam and used to wander around the site after dark on his own. He used to hide in a locker during the day.

Our current cat, now 13 and been caravanning all his life, isn't quite so bright so we keep him on lead with a body harness. He thoroughly enjoys going away even to the point of being totally relaxed when we put his harness on at home before we leave and when he goes in his box. A totally different reaction to when we try to get him in the same box without the harness!!! Intelligent or what.

He sprawls out in the caravan and we frequently take him for walks or attach him on his telescopic lead to a stake in the ground. The only problem is careless dog owners who think he should be frightened of their dogs and he isn't. One got too close and ended up with three stripes on his nose with a lot of whimpering.

Thoroughly recommend it!

Hi, thanks for your response, both our cats are "seniors" now and I do not know if they would adapt to a harness and lead but could try at home first, yours seem more than happy with them.
I also have a dog, who is bossed around by the cats, and goes out on a stake and long lead, so could try putting the cats on another, guess I will have to be brave and just try it!
Good to know it works for you.

Hi there
My friend takes their cat in their caravan when they go away, but they don't let it outside the awning unless its on a lead as they are scared she will get lost. If they go away and get a neighbour to feed her she disappears (this has happened twice) for a long time and they don't want to put her in Cattery. They do say its abit constraining to always have door shut on caravan/awning, but its the best solution for them. Hope it works for you!

Hi, Thanks for your comments, I do not like putting mine in a cattery either they get very stressed, my daughter used to look after them at home but is often away now. Perhaps I could try the harness idea and have thought about putting them in the dog's crate in the awning if it is not too hot. Posted by Pamela Bray on 15 Mar 2013

I could be a photo of our Felix I posted the other day. He is an older cat, we got him from a rescue centre, think he came from a farm so was once quite feral.
Now he lives with use in a flat (4th floor) and never goes out. When we first started motorhoming I did think of putting him on a leash but he is just happy being with us in the van of an evening, sleeps during the day mostly, lazy cat.
We have seen cats on leads as well a sat out in large wire cages, I wouldnt trust him to roam,
He can be very stinky so the litter tray gets cleaned out straight away.
Last year we had our first camping trip to France and Felix came along. We got him chipped and jabbed, the customs wasnt a complicated thing.
Given his nature, he just loves being with us, it would be cruel to put him in a cattery.

That's great you can take him with you......also saw the picture of him...looks very comfortable! Posted by Mary Jones on 19 Mar 2013
Hi, He looks very at home and you seem to have settled him in so well considering he was feral we tried to home a feral cat who was injured, took him to vets to get treatment, fed him up but as soon as he was well he disappeared again, but at least he stood a better chance!
You are adventurous taking him abroad guess that is a good indication that it can really work! I think I shall give it a try encouraged by all the lovely replies.
Thanks.

I've often wondered this too - and how to keep them safe from dogs on site. Our friend takes their rabbit in the 'van, although I understand it is easier to keep tabs on than a cat might be!
