We want to take our campervan to Orkney this summer. Does anyone have any advice that will assist us in our planning. Our campervan is a large Iveco and we take "Gromit" our Border collie everywhere with us. Any information; on recommended campsites, ferries and paperwork required for Gromit etc would be very much appreciated.
Kind regards

We went to Orkney two years ago with our dog. We went via Pentland Ferries from Gills Bay to St Margaret's Hope. This is the shortest crossing and you do not require photo ID. The downside is that you have to reverse you motorhome onto the ferry. Not as bad as it sounds, you are guided every inch of the way. You do not have to leave you dog in the vehicle, but you cannot take it into the lounge. If its raining you will get wet. We stayed at the Pickaquoy centre campsite at Kirkwall. Expensive but good also central to tour. Warning, if a cruise ship docks at Kirkwall avoid tourist sites such as Skara Brae, they will be very crowded. Hope this helps.

Hi, We have a number of Residents of Orkney and Visitors to Orkney who stop off here either before getting or leaving the Northlink ferry from Aberdeen. The sailings are normally late afternoon to arrive early next morning in either direction I believe. I would suggest you look on the Northlink (Serco) website for more details. There is also a service from Scrabster, but I think it is only a small ferry, and the Aberdeen ferry seems to be the preference of many.

Thank you for the information David. Kind regards Alan Posted by alan Myland on 26 Mar 2013
Hello David I have finally found time to check out your campsite and note that you mention you welcome cvaravan club members. We are members of the Caravan and Camping Club and the Motorcaran Club. I will not join the Caravan Club on principle over an incident that occured in 1971 so does this mean that we would not be welcome on your site?
Regards
Alan
