Has anyone got any rave reviews or even bad ones relating to municipal aires in France. ( not the aires by the motorways next to the petrol stations ) We are hoping to go through the tunnel in July ( need one near there ) with our camper and then head down near Lourdes. We have been every year with the car for the last 20 years but this will only be our second time with the camper. We restricted our movements to Normandy and Brittany last year and stayed on some nice sites but want to stretch the budget a little this time. Some sites by the coast are an arm and a leg so a few municipal stop-overs might be welcome to make the pennies go further. Hope to be retired by then but I'm also a meany at heart as well.

Regards,

Jimmy

An aire that I can highly recommend is not too far from the ports/tunnel. Its a private aire but don't let that put you off as the views are stunning and the welcome very friendly.

Hi Jimmy
Aires are great in france over the last few years we have used them a great deal of times.
all the aires book is a must. we go most years for a month in the summer and then try to get for a week late september we only really stay on aires as they so easy to stay at and cheap
(some are still free) the only time we have had to use a campsite is on our month trip was when we needed to wash some clothes. Dont worry go for it we were a bit nervous the first time many years ago when we first used them but now use them all the time .
Cheers Mark

You will enjoy the Chunnel, we use a lot of Camping Cheques so for 15 Euros you get good quality Campsites for 2 people with electricity. There are a lot of good Municipals and Aires but there are a lot we have just driven off from as they are not worth risking an expensive Camper Van on. There are lists of ACSI, Camping Cheque, Municipal and Aires on the computer depending which way you are going when you go across, also what time you cross makes a difference as with the hour difference if you have a late crossing you can't go very far the first night.
Regards & Enjoy

Hi Jimmy,

Have you also thought about the French Passion scheme?

Just £25 p.a. and gives you access to hundreds of vineyards and farms which allow motor-homes (not caravans) to overnight for free?

All they ask is that you say hello and keep the place tidy.

Between this and aires, if you like wild camping you could stay all year in France for just the cost of derv, food and drink!

Regards,

Malcolm

Thank you Malcolm.......I'll look into your suggestion. Sounds good. I don't mind wild camping at all as I'm pretty used to doing it on foot with a full pack in the more remote parts of Scotland. Wild camping in the camper van is luxury is it not?
Regards,
Jimmy
