Hi Kevin
It depends on how fast and how much you want to pay in tolls. I have travelled most routes over the past 30 years to this area and Spain there is about 3 hours difference between all routes.
1) the easest route to travel is the most expensive A26 A5 A31 A6 A7 BUT ALL YOU WILL SEE IS CONCRETE and pay over 100E each way plus expensive fuel.
2) If you choose the Paris route:- rather than use the Peripherque I use the A104 route from Charles De Gaulle to Fontainbleau then down to Nevers, Moulins, Clermont Ferrand, where you pick up the toll free A75 a must is stop at the Aire for the Viaduc de Garabit and the Aire before the Viaduc de Millau beware after Aire Le Caylar you must keep your speed down to 50km very steep down hill.
3) Another way is A16 A28 to Rouen them N154 to Chartres picking up A71 near Orleans
Dont forget fuel is very expensive on motorways a lot cheaper at supermarkets where you get 24hour pay at pumps check with your bank that your cards are set for europe.
enjoy your trip
Regards
Alan

Assuming you're coming from Calais, there is little difference in time between using A26, A1, A75, Paris and Millau and going via A26/A6, Reims, Lyon. Only about 20 minutes total although the Reims - Lyon is a fair bit longer. Both routes have there downsides. Go the Paris route and unless you do some clever navigation, your sat nav and most definitely the sign posts will take you around Paris's inner ring road, the formidable Boulevard Peripherique. If you're used to driving around Central London, OK. I don't recommend it and it's worse for your passengers who don't have the benefit of knowing just what you've seen. I've done it myself towing a caravan on a couple of occasions. Changing lane is the hairy part, There are no gaps. Indicate and pull over without waiting as soon as you have half a chance. Stay in Lane 2 until you reach your exit as the right-hand lane is the one used for entering and leaving the road. Stay on it and you'll keep leaving the Peripherique, going around a roundabout and then coming back on; yes, I did! Millau is absolutely magnificent if views and heights are your thing. They aren't my wife's and she had to keep her eyes shut. when I remarked on the view I got back a terrified "Keep your eyes on the road!" The route via Reims and Lyon is much less hazardous although it is busy around Lyon. There is a handy motorway bypass however. It's the A46, bypassing Lyon to the East.It takes a little longer but the A6 goes right through the centre of Lyon and can be very busy. Hope this has been helpful.

i have been over the viaduct a few times going down to Barcelona , i wasnt that impressed with it , you cant see much due to the barriers and wind deflectors , but there is a viewing station if you have time to stop Posted by joe croft on 26 Mar 2013
