No one in the family is really any good at photography but it seems such a waste with the stunning views we have here. My daughter is interested in starting up learning how to use her camera properly, does anyone have any tips for photography on Dartmoor?

Peter, I was not very good with my camera but looked into doing a course. They all seemed so expensive but then I found the local high school ran a six week course for £30. The teacher took the evening classes and help each individual. Have a look on the web it's worth it.

Hi OR,
you don't say what type of camera your daughters using i.e 35 mm film or digital, either way shouldn't really make much difference as most modern cameras ( especially digital) have some pre-set scene modes for landscape, portrait ,sport photography

so taking good pictures is within every ones reach, lots of tips ,help and advice can be picked up from sites such as this
http://bridgecamerausers.com/forum/index.php.

but there are loads of other similar sites.

but in my view there is no substitute for experience, shoot loads of pictures at various settings, this way you'll learn what settings do and don't work for a given subject ,alternatively, leave your camera on auto and it'll do the rest

That's really helpful, thank you Peter. We have beautiful sunshine today so I'm sure she'll be out! Posted by The Old Rectory on 02 Jun 2013

Hi OR

Ive been into photography for over 40yrs starting out with a Kodak Brownie, then I got Pentax SLRsl Now I have a Canon 400D and a Canon 7D with various lenses and filters,

I mostly agree with Peter, its good advice, as said you didnt specify a camera,

I would suggest doing a search on google for Photograph Composition, there are all different modes on cameras as also said, but for me theres only one way to got and thats Full Manual that way you have complete control over the result (theres also a setting called Bulb, which is also Full Manual but you can extend exposure length anywhere from seconds to up to 1hr or even more which I wouldnt recommend as it may burn the sensor out, but its good for long exposures for say waterfall/river shots so the water looks milky, say 15 to 20secs exposure )

You may also need a good sturdy Tripod I have Manfrotto 055 Pros, a good peice of equipment to get is a cable release, for the above long exposure shots of water light trails amongst other uses

A good tip is google the places your going and look at others images of the places, so you get an idea for composition, light, time of day they all play a factor in getting competent photographs,

And as Peter say practice makes perfect but above all have fun enjoy your photography and experiment, oh and dont forget to enjoy the scenery with looking through the lens

Heres a link to my flickr pages the first few images at present are long exposures http://www.flickr.com/photos/davenjulie/

All the best to your daughter in her photographic endeavours
