Producing since 1982, the now 6000 vine-strong Glyndwr Vineyard is Wales' longest established and largest vineyard and very proudly so. Set in the beautiful Vale of Glamorgan, an area well worth a touring or camping holiday in its own right, the south-facing slopes of Glyndwr Vineyard are ideal for grape production, proudly producing two whites, a rose a red and two vintage sparkling wines all held in high-esteem both in the UK and abroad. Vine varieties include Rondo, Regent, Madeline Angevine, Triomphe d’alsace and Seyval Blanc.
This vineyard is not a highly-commercial endeavour, stripped of character or natural features in the pursuit of the highest yields. Instead the vineyard prides itself on its environmentally friendly approach, the surrounding hedgerows being left to grow wild to encourage bird-life and the vines themslves being fed with organic matter. When you visit you can also enjoy the adjoining gardens complete with ponds, woodland areas and orchards from which the winery's own cider is made.
Tours at Glyndwr are also likely to feel just that little bit more special; they are definitely more intimate and do, therefore, require some planning ahead. Tours run on dates published on the vineyard's website (www.glyndwrvineyard.co.uk/tours) and start with a glass of vintage sparkling wine (as all the best tours should!) and homemade canapes (we told you it would feel special!) all partaken at the heart of the vineyard. Next a tour of the 6 acre vineyard, with plenty of time to ask questions and hear the stories and experiences of the vineyard owner. Finally back to the 'barn' for freshly prepared and locally produced food, all part of the tour ticket price, with plenty more tasting to boot. Indulgent, or what?!
