Spend a day in Maldon



If you are camping or touring near Maldon in Essex you can throw yourself into the maritime history of the town without having to spend many pennies. Placed as it is at the mouth of the Blackwater estuary, there's plenty of things to see and do. Head for the famous Promenade Park, where families have enjoyed the space to relax and the freedom to play for decades. With over 1000 trees of over 65 different varieties, you can walk the mile long 'Tree Trail' through the grounds. Alternatively, unpack your flask and have a cuppa whilst sitting on the walls and enjoy views over the estuary. Your littlies will love the children's play area, skate and BMX park and other activities laid on for visitors. Adjacent to Promenade Park lies historic and picturesque Hythe Quay where you might catch a glimpse of one of the surviving Thames Barges which for centuries carried food and bedding straw into the capital and horse-manure back out! Explore the fishing village, home for centuries to the fishermen whose fleet left Hythe port in search of eels, whelks, plaice and sole in the estuary.

Enjoy a cheap day out in Old Leigh



OK, well you might have to pay for car parking but a visit to Old Leigh in Essex is likely to keep everyone smiling, young and old, without costing that pretty penny. This traditional fishing village has managed, in spite of its many visitors, to retain its charm and history. Wander the rambling streets that stretch along the shoreline, have a nose around the cockle sheds, check out the fishing boats moored in the pretty harbour and soak up some rays in the sunshine on the beach whilst the sailing boats pass by. Whether you are an old hand at crabbing or tis is your first time, you should definitely bring along a bucket and a crab line and have a family crab fishing competition off the harbour wall! of course, if you really want to enjoy the festivities, time your stay with the Regatta or Folk Festival in Old Leigh which run annually.

Visit Belfairs Woodland Centre



Opened in 2013 by Springwatch presenter Martin Hughes-Games, the Belfairs Woodland Centre offers a great morning or afternoon out exploring a tract of Essex's ancient woodland. Pop into the Belfairs Woodland Visitor centre first and pick up a map of the woodland - there are a number of marked trails that you can follow. You'll find children's play areas and any number of spots for a picnic. Unfortunately, to help conserve the wildlife and habitat of the woodland, dogs aren't allowed.
