Hertfordshire is a great location for a camping or touring break but it doesn't have to cost you the earth to keep the family happy. Here are some of the free days out in Hertfordshire waiting to be enjoyed...Visit the Natural History Museum at Tring The Natural History Museum at Tring houses the once private collection of Lionel Walter Rothschild and is a must for family days out in Hertfordshire. The collections and displays are world-class but entry to the museum is free , offering hours of activity. With 6 separate galleries housing different animal species, from large carnivores and primates to crocodiles, crustaceans and fish, youngsters and adults alike will be fascinated by the exhibits. The great news is that the museum is open every day of the year except 24-26th December (fair enough!) , making it ideal for camping days in the area where the weather isn't quite behaving itself...Scott's Grotto... And now for something completely different! Scott's Groto , a Grade I listed site, with a Grade II listed summerhouse built above. This is likely to be one of the more unusual activities you undertake in your bid to enjoy free days out in Hertfordshire, a series of interconnected underground chambers built for 18th century poet John Scott, which extend 67ft into the chalk hillside. Building grottos at the time was highly fashionable and this is a great example: the chambers and carved tunnels are lined with shells, flints and bits of coloured glass; one of the chambers even has seats built into its walls. So prepare yourself to go deep underground and explore the delights of this unusual structure Obviously high heels are not advisable, but then, who'd be camping in stillettos anyway? Open each Saturday and Bank Holiday Monday between April 1st and September 28th, this unusual attraction remains free to visitors, although a suggested £1 donation is very much appreciated to help cover maintenance costs. Go Wild in the River Lee Country Park When legs need stretching, energy needs burning and everyone needs to let off some steam, heading to a country park is a great way to ensure that everyone's need are met... and the River Lee Country Park is no exception, providing over 1000 acres of fun, space and diversoin. The place is huge, though, touching two counties, so you will probably need to do a bit of research about what you want to do before heading there... here are some ideas to get you started...There's a fantastic 'natural play' park for your kids to explore near Pindar car park. Of course, those of us who camp with our four legged friends know that the canine campers among us also need to let off steam. Well, near the kids' play area at Pindar there is also a 500 metre twn obstacle dog agility exercise course, ideal for burning off some doggy energy and entirely free to use. There are literally miles of cycle path through the country park, so it's an ideal spot for a family bike ride with a stop for a picnic at one of the scenic glades, meadows or on the banks of the River Lee.Campsites near Free days out in Hertfordshire These campsites, touring grounds and holiday parks will place you closeby the free days out in hertfordshire we've described here, along with plenty more available activities. Use the 'Things to Do' on each campsite's individual listing to find out about over 1000 other local attractions, venues, shops, pubs and restaurants in the vicinity of each site.
