Visit Brockholes Nature Reserve

If you have any budding naturalists in your family, you'll want to take a trip to Brockholes, a 250 acre nature reserve with a network of trails and hides for bird and nature watching. Brockholes
is run by the Lancashire Wildlife Trust who have worked wonders in creating a plethora of vital habitats on the site of an old quarry, making it a fabulous base for a peaceful, picturesque day of discovery. Of course, it is particularly famous for its floating visitor centre - a first for the UK - you won't get much closer to the water than this without getting wet!

Meet the horses at Penny Farm

For something a little different, ear mark Wednesday or the weekend of your camping or touring holiday to visit Penny Farm, Lancashire, a World Horse Welfare Centre which houses and rehabilitates rescued horses from across the country. Although there is a small charge for some of the activities on offer at Penny Farm, admission is free and you are welcome to bring a picnic. Meet the 60 or so horses and take part in one of the farm's 'Dale's Trails', a fun activity trail which will enable you to see the farm's equine inhabitants relaxing in the fields. and browse the art work which the Associatoin of Animal Artists exhibit at the farm, the sales of which help to fund World Horse Welfare. And, if the weather is wet? Don't worry - the stables are indoors, so you can still enjoy the farm.

Head to Beautiful Barley

The village of Barley might be small but it's a great base for a family day out with plenty to see and do...much of it free. This is a historic area, with the fascinating 400 year old true story of the Pendle Witches written through the local culture. It's not a pretty tale, of course, as tales of witch hunting seldom are, so your younger more impressionable children might not need the entire history regaled to them in the clearest of detail (best to avoid nightmares in the middle of a campsite, if at all possible, in our humble opinion but the area certainly is pretty, with one of the country's most celebrated picnic sites based in the village itself on the grassy banks of the river, beside a stone bridge. The Barley Picnic Site is ideally placed at the foot of beautiful Pendle Hill, so you can either build up an appetite climbing to the 577m summit (not for the faint hearted!) or get some energy up for the climb by eating first! Later on, visit the Pendle Sculpture Trail and experience the tale of the Pendle Witches through the medium of lead artist Philippe Handford's vision of the tale: explore and touch the scultures for an exciting and stimulating walk through Aitken Wood where the trail is situated. The village of Barley really is one of the best free days out Lancashire has to offer campers and tourers alike.
