St Ives Estate, Bingley

Ok, so let's agree a checklust of the kinds of activities that can keep little hands and minds busy and satisfied during an afternoon outdoors...ducks to feed? Check - head to the Coppice Pond and you'll find plenty of obliging wildfowl waiting for your scraps. Children's playground? Check - a great play area with plenty of interaction, suitable for a range of ages. A trail of some kind? Yes - a fabulous sculture trail with faces and other oddities to find, touch and wonder about. Got a dog to exercise along with the kids? No problem - St Ives Estate has any number of walks and trails. It's a fabulous place for a picnic, with tonnes of scope for adventurous play, hide and seek and for parents to relax on a blanket with a drink!

Hardcastle Crags

Woodlands provide a wonderful day out and there are plenty to choose from in Yorkshire. A firm favourite, making a fabulous centrepiece location for any camping or touring break in the area, is the National Trust's Hardcastle Crags, a beautiful wooded valley with a 19th Century Mill lying at it heart. This is truly a beautiful spot on the South Pennines and, apart from paying for the car parking, explorations of the woodlands are entirely free. Follow the path of tumbling, burbling streams, stike out along footpaths, take a nature trail and spot wildlife, play hide and seek and absorb the power of stunning waterfalls.

York's National Railway Museum

This place is awesome - even if you're not totally bonkers about trains (which I'm not in the least - but it was still a fabulous day out!). And, if members of your family do go just a little bit goggled-eyed when it comes to vintage steam and diesel locomotives, a day out at the National Railway Museum will leave you with a warm fuzzy feeling for a long while, because train-spotters will LOVE IT! OK, so you'll have to pay for parking in York, so the day isn't completely free, but with nearly 300 full sized vehicles on display and over 1,000,000 railway-history related artefacts, the parking charge is well worth it.
