360 degrees at Snapes Point, Salcombe, Devon

At times in the South Hams region of Devon, with its undulating hills ruched like a tumbled duvet, it can be challenging to get a view further than into the next valley and towards the next hill. Snapes Point with its stunning views over the Salcombe Estuary and across the surrounding unspoilt countryside is a must for anyone thinking of indulging in a spot of UK camping or caravanning in this beautiful area.

The walk around Snapes Point forms part of the South West Coastal Path and provides a contrast to the cliffs and seascapes of the rest of the trail in this area. From Snapes Point walkers can enjoy all 360 degrees of the Salcombe Estuary panorama, an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and designated a site of Special Scientific Interest due to the abundance of local wildlife. Look out onto nearby Salcombe; watch tiny yachts and boats sail on the Estuary below; see the play of sunlight on the landscape.

The walk itself is perhaps one of the easiest walks in Devon - for hardened walkers, it's more of a way to rustle up a bit of an appetite before a pub lunch. But it's a great way to SEE this area, to understand it's topography and, short of actually being in the air, there's no other way of doing it! Don't forget your camera: with the configuratoin of boats in the estuary constantly shifting, and with the light reflecting off the water, this is an ever-changing scene.
