RSPB Loch Garten near Abernethy, surrounded by ancient Caledonian pineforest, is famous for its Ospreys. The nature reserve was the Ospreys chosen site when they returned to breed in Scotland, the area providing them with everything that they need to raise their young. On site is the 'Osprey Centre' with plenty of information, binoculars and telescopes for those new to birding. The state of the art hide built there provides stunning views of the Osprey family life. Visiting the nature reserve is not just about Loch Garten Ospreys, though. The rare and spectacular Capercaillie lives and breed in the surrounding forest, April and May being the best time to witness or listen for the characteristic ferocious displays of the males during mating season, with their characteristic throaty 'lec'. Come also to see Goldeneye ducks, Scottish Crossbill and Crested Tit...or to simply lap up the outstanding beauty Loch Garten. Search here for a pitch on one of these campsites or a stay in one of the Loch Garten lodges available and place birding at the heart of your camping in the Highlands.
