Audley End House and Gardens, under the stewardship of English Heritage, is an exciting place to visit for anyone interested in the history of horticulture and landscaping. The building around which the garden was developed is in itself a delight: an impressive early seventeeth century country house and a fine example of Jacobean architecture set just outside of Saffron Walden in Essex. The gardens, delightfully ornate in shape and structure, were designed by the famous English landscape architect Capability Brown in the eighteenth century, generally recognised as one of the fathers of artistic landscape design.

The lavish grounds are divided by the River Cam and there are numerous crossings in the garden by ornate bridges, cleverly woven into the overall garden layout. Throughout the garden the water of the Cam provides a mirror in which reflections of the estate can be viewed and enjoyed. Kitchen garden lovers should head for the restored walled garden in the grounds which is fully functioning and productive, much as it would have been in the Victorian era when it would have supplied the main house and its inhabitants with sustainance.
