Campsites near Belsay Hall

These camp sites in Northumberland will place you within easy reach of one of the most unusual gardens in the UK. The grounds of Belsay Hall and nearby Castle are a gardener's delight and well worth making the centrepiece of a day's activities when touring or camping in the North West. The house, built in the nineteenth century for Sir Charles Monck, now stands empty, providing an impressive tour for visitors among its Greek inspired pillars.

The garden is a great one for plant lovers, as the buildings and grounds belonged to the same family for generations, many of whom were passionately dedicated to the plants and trees grown around the hall and castle. The design of the formal gardens nearest the hall were influenced by Humphry Repton, an advocate of placing flowers near a house. These beds, now fully restored using the extensive notes kept over the years, are a colourful riot, spilling out over paths and lawns. Visitors can enjoy the Magnolia garden, the Winter Garden with its croquet lawn and the restfulness of the Yew Garden.

Far less structured and world famous for its inventive planting and exotic species is the Quarry Garden. Sheltered from the elements by the ravine-like rocky sides, this was once the quarry from where the stone to build the hall was taken, cleverly transformed by Sir Charles Monck into a strange other-world. Pools of water were added and dark evergreen trees planted on the perimeter to enhance the sense of height and depth. Visitors always comment on the foreign quality of this Quarry Garden: there's a lush, jungle atmosphere created by ferns, creepers and palms and other more exotic plants and trees from Asia that enjoy the microclimate provided by the quarry's shelter. Dip under the tall arches and wander between steep-sided rocky ravines... could this garden really be situated in the north west of the UK?
