These campsites near Boughton House in Northamptonshire's countryside will place you closeby one of Great Britain's best preserved stately homes. The word 'impressive' really doesn't cover the half of it, with the house crammed full with important collections of fine art, furniture, tapestries and carpets.

The gardens and parkland comprising the Boughton Estate are equally splendid. If you want to marvel and wonder at the way that gardeners can mould and shape the landscape into vistas on such grand scales, then Boughton Gardens is the place to visit. Inspired by the water features of Versailles and spurred by advances in science, much of the grounds comprise of the famous series of water channels and land-scuplturing, providing clean lines, stunning reflections and a calming sense of order and mastery. Watch the play of light and shadow of the trees' silhouettes on the manicured slopes. After hundreds of years of neglect, the gardens are now restored to their former glory. There are more traditional delights to be found in the Walled Garden's herbaceous borders and the tranquility of the Rose Garden.

But the view is not all retrospective at Boughton. The restored lawns, tranquil woodland walks and tree-lined avenues are complemented by a series of modern projects, not least the Orpheus Project, designed by Kim Wilkie and created in 2009. This is a striking land-form sculpture, an inverted pyramid sunk into the earth, mirroring a pyramid created 300 years ago that lies beside it. If you have time, sit beside Orpheus and watch the reflection of rolling clouds and the change of light as the day passes - mesmerising!
